@ HF: Wow. I'm sorry to hear that, HF. But, as Doc said, there was probably little you could do to change his mind. The best you could do was try to cheer him up, but I doubt it would've made much of a difference. Some people are just foolish.

Anyways, I always somehow manage to miss the post rush. >.> Must be my schedule.....

Thanks GF. Yeah...I know that all too well...but still. I'll probably carry the pain, and the guilty feeling I should've done something, with me for a while yet....

Don't. If it's like you said, and it wasn't easy to tell, why kick yourself about it? It'll only make you feel worse, and wont do anything for him/her.

They say that those most likely to commit suicide don't show any obvious signs of depression and such. There's really nothing you could've done.

Suicide... such a horrid thing to have in this world... Why? Why is it, that people think that taking thei rown life is worth it, when there's so much more ahead of them if they had lived? Because, people have had hammered into their minds that they aren't anything special. They're just a single organism, amongst a sea of 7 billion people, who share no special distinction on this planet. Within 100 years of their deaths, no one would remember them. Their life would be meaningless, just like every other human life. Eventually, humanity itself will go extinct, as a new, more evolved species takes over, and no one will care... We are nothing more than animals... just hyper-evolved animals... nothing more... Tis the horrific consequences of evolutionary thinking...

I feel sadness for your friend's suicide, HF... I really do.. tears of sadness roll down my face...

That's kinda a stupid thing to say, Gira. We are, by far, the most intelligent and successful race on this planet. It took the dinosaurs millions of years to become what they were. We've only been around a few thousand, and we've accomplished so much more, coming from so little. If anything, believing in evolution only furthers the pride in what we've become, considering others had just as much chance, yet we endure.

Humanity is destructive and violent, but also ingenious and one-of-a-kind. You must take the good with the bad. And just because you were born about billions doesn't stop you from being significant. What did Einstein think when he was young and failing school? I doubt he knew right there that he was going to be a very important person. If you work for your goals, you will have a shot at doing something amazing. If you accept the odds against you as fact, then you have already lost.

BUT, and here's the inportant but, as time goes on, the accomplishments of those who have achieved fame (Einstine, George Washington, Lincoln...) will pass from memory, or so secularism goes. Millions of years will pass by, and eventually, humanity will go extinct. then, who will care for the Billions of humans who have died? no one will. I myself am not an Atheist or an Evolutionist, but that is where Secular thinking leads to. WHat is one's goal in life? to party while they're alive, and rake in the fun and joy, for when you die, that's it. GAME OVER. Of course, Christianity has a far better view of life, but that can be taken into the Creation vs. Evolution thread...

Most people tend to think of themselves as special, or important. THat is most certainly true, but when depression/ negative stress reaches a point in one's life, then they begin to think that, they aren't special... they are just an animal, a veyr smart and talented animal, but still an animal. What is it that seperates said person from a Gorilla, according to the one about to commit suicide? absolutely nothing at all...

That is a horrible thing, and I myself absolutely HATE it when people decide their lifes are meaningless...

So you're basically telling us people are correct when they say religion is just comfort.
Humans, since their development, have always had a drive for knowledge. If nothing else, I'd say that's the reason for humanity to continue on. To continue gaining that and expanding what we know.
But yes, for all practical purposes, life is pointless. It's like art; it's beautiful because it has no purpose, it simply happens.

no, no, NO NO NO! Religion is not just comfort, DAMNIT! Christianity, in particular, is FAR from "just comfort". Read the Bible, and you'll find that out big time... most other religions... yeah, they're there mainly for comfort... and to explain why things are... Bu tthis descussion should be in the Evo vs. Creation thread...

Who is to say, if another race comes about, they won't be interested in our society? The dinosaurs died millions of years ago, and they certainly numbered in the billions. And yet, today, we study them, how they live, how they look, etc etc...

Thing is, you can't study society and history from dinosaurs, because they don't have any. We do. Its equally as likely that the next race to come along will keep a detailed history of our race, as they would completely ignore us.

And who in the name of all that is holy (lol) said that evolution = no afterlife? I believe in God and Heaven, and I believe in evolution as well.

Isn't there a Creationism vs Evolution thread? And I am once again siding with TT, in that I'm a Christian and I believe in evolution fully.

By Evolution, I refer to the kind of Evolution most everyone thinks of... that there is no God, and that life spontaneously Generated from random conditions...

Now, THeistic Evolution (the kind you and G4E believe in.) is a whole diffrent can of worms and one I'm not prepared to counter...

That will be what happens to humanity if indeed another race were to rise up.. we'd only be a historic curiosity. People are fascinated in Dinosaurs becuase they were some of the biggest, the smallest, and the oddest creatures to ever live. For most of them, we have no comparison for. But as for we humans? those races that come after is will probably jsut assume we were an odd Genus of primate. Even people today get human skeletons mixed up with those of Gorillas, Chimpanzees, and other hominids. Whose to say that the next race to suceed us won't make a mistake and think that we were just bipedal apes with big brains?

Hey Gira, I've got somethnig that may make you second think yourself: What if nothing as smart as us ever evolves again? I was talking to some guy one day who thinks that we'll use so much of the earth's resources that no other life that thinks on our level will become as advanced as us for millions upon millions of years after we go extinct. How's that for a happy ending to our legacy?

Yeah... that would definitely suck... and billions of years later the sun would run out of fuel, and all life on earth would be wiped out...

Well, by the time enough happens I think any evidence of humans' history on Earth will be gone. In about 5 billion years the sun will expand into a red giant, engulfing the inner planets. Either we'll be extinct through that, or we'll have moved to another planet (likely on a different solar system). So yes, on Earth, chances of a more intelligent or advanced species rising are slim to none.
