Mistpool rose and scraped earth over the bones of the fish, giving the loner a nod. She meowed, "Yes. Let's go; the others will be wondering where we are." With a flick of her striped tail she set off toward camp, as confident as ever on her own Clan's territory.
Shadowstar stood watching her Clanmates and breathed a quiet sigh of satisfaction. Her wounds were stinging, but she ignored the pain, surveying her Clan with pride. This was where she was meant to be; at the head of a strong Clan, unafraid to defend their allies and fight for what belonged to the warriors of the forest. Maybe no one would have guessed she would be here now back when she was a kit...she'd always been small and sickly. But she'd proven wrong every cat who had ever told her what she couldn't do...and she would continue to do so until she lost her last life.
She was distracted from her thoughts by a friendly meow and turned to see Swanfeather padding toward her. The sisters touched noses in a brief but affectionate greeting. "So how did it go?" Swanfeather asked, sitting beside the tabby leader.
Shadowstar purred, "It went better than I expected it to. Those rogues will have more than a few scars to remember us by." She paused, regarded Swanfeather curiously, then went on, "I met a loner today after the battle...a former ShadowClan cat. He advised me to guard our borders carefully in case of future attacks....if I give you a description, do you think you would know him?"
The white she-cat gave her a long look through narrowed green eyes. Swanfeather was known for being good with names and faces, and had plenty of friends and acquaintances in the other Clans. "I might. It depends..." she meowed carefully, studying her sister. "Why do you want to know?"
"I'm curious, that's all," Shadowstar mewed with a shrug. She knew what her sister was thinking, and added, "I know the warrior code as well as any other Clan cat, Swanfeather." She gave a description of the tom, and Swanfeather sat there for a while, looking thoughtful. Finally, to Shadowstar's disappointment, she shook her head.
"I'm sorry, Shadowstar," she mewed. "I don't think I know him...but who knows. You may see him again. Ask him for his name if you do," she added somewhat teasingly, but there was a hint of warning in her gaze too. She hesitated before meowing, "And...be careful."
Shadowstar didn't have to ask what the reason for the cautionary words was. She licked the top of her sister's head comfortingly. "Don't worry," the tabby leader meowed, "I'm all grown up now. Go and enjoy yourself." As Swanfeather padded away, Shadowstar felt a small pang of isolation. Swanfeather's concern was appreciated, but the ThunderClan leader was all too aware of the rules...she was forbidden to seek a mate, unlike her sister. The Clan came first, always. If a leader was distracted from her duty, the Clan would be crippled...that was something that could not happen.
