"Tiger," the kit mewled. "My mama's name is Raven." Out of the worst of the wind and rain, he would soon begin to warm up. "She's gonna be mad," he added, chattering on in typical kit fashion. "She told me not to wander off, and now I'm lost..."

Wraith chuckled between licks. "I'm sure she'll understand you just wanted to play. Every big cat is a kit at some point. Even your mother" he growled reassuringly...

"Even you?" Tiger squeaked, looking at Wraith with wide, disbelieving eyes.

Wraith chuckled amusedly at the response. "Yes. Even me. I can remember trying to chase a squirrel up a tree when I wasn't much bigger than you are now....ended up flat on my back" he growled...

Tiger let out a purr of laughter, yawning right afterward. "Mama says I'm too small to chase squirrels," he mewed. "But one day I'll get one and she'll see I'm all grown up, and she doesn't have to give me her food too..."

"She gives you her food?" meowed Wraith, cocking his head. It seemed she was struggling more than he thought. But with struggle came desperation. And with desperation came danger...He would have to be careful in how he handled this...

"Yeah." the little tabby looked down at his paws. "I tell her, 'mama, you need to eat' and she says she does...but I think she's lying." Tiger looked up, confusion plain on his face. "Why would she lie to me?"

Wraith thought about what the kitten told him, considering how best to respond. After a pause, he smiled. "She doesn't want you to worry about her. She's fine. She's old enough to take care of you. I'm sure she knows what she's doing" he growled encouragingly, licking between the kit's ears as he finished grooming him. "Now, stop worrying your little head over her and get to sleep. We'll look for her tomorrow when the storm's over" he added...

Tiger started to protest, but a huge yawn interrupted him. "'kay," he murmured, laying his head down and closing his eyes, exhaustion claiming him.

By morning, Firestreak was already gone, having left after a partially sleepless night in the rain. His experiences in the camp, however, were enough to make up for his unfortunate night's sleep, and by now the rain had come and gone. Trotting through the puddles still fresh throughout the forest, the loner made his way back to the tree he had called home, thankful that he had not run into any bitter rogues along the way...

Tiberium raised his head from the cool soil slowly, his expression that of bewilderment. His yellow eyes showed his confusion as he thought about the images of the night he had seen. He looked to his brother who was also stirring. He awoke seconds later, also visibly confused. "Did you...have the same dream?" Tiberium asked awkwardly, not sure how his brother would take the abrupt question. To his surprise, the gray loner nodded. "They spoke to me" he growled without any elaboration. It wasn't needed; Tiberium knew what Ferallion meant. "That story..." Tiberium growled, looking up to the tree tops. Water droplets dripped off of the moist leaves and through the breaks in them, he could see overcast skies of light gray. "The other loners didn't tell us that about this place" Ferallion mewed, a hint of solemness in his voice. "Yeah..." Tiberium replied, looking back to his brother. "I don't think I'd want to spend another night here. Even if it is raining" he added

Wraith lay beside the kit, eyes scanning the wet grasslands around him, a few trees dotting the landscape between here and the forests east and north east of him, the distant roar of a monster on the thunderpath all but inaudible in the dampened air left in the wake of the storm. shards of sunlight pierced through the clouds overhead, seeming almost solid in their strength as they carved a slowly shifting pattern of light across the landscape below. droplets dripped off the leaves of the tree around him; tears of joy at the life giving liquid's gift to the old oak, which may have shielded hundreds of generations of warriors and loners before him. It was easy to get lost in thought here, beneath the branches and between the roots of the ancient oak. But so long as the kit remained asleep, that was all he had to do...

As dawn broke, Shadowstar emerged from her den in time to see the dawn patrol leaving camp. She turned her head slowly, taking in the whole camp, finding herself enjoying the relative stillness. Through the branches of the bush that made up the warriors' den, she could barely glimpse her sister's white flank, rising and falling steadily as Swanfeather breathed, curled up among the other warriors. The black and silver tabby leader found her gaze drawn upwards, to where the last visible stars were fading in the light of the day. I've protected her, she thought, remembering the days when Swanfeather, Swanpaw back then, had been teased mercilessly for her pelt. Even the warriors had expressed concern that Swanfeather wouldn't be able to creep up on prey because of her white fur. Shadowstar's whiskers twitched as she remembered the day Swanfeather had finally gotten fed up with the teasing and left camp before dawn. It had begun raining in the night and didn't stop all day; Swanfeather hadn't come back until sundown. her pelt had been nearly dripping with mud, but she'd been dragging the biggest rabbit Shadowstar had ever seen. Moonsong had been so proud.... Shaking herself from her memories, she watched as Falconflight settled by the base of the Highrock, ready to start sorting out the rest of the patrols. She'd chosen well when she'd named him deputy. As she turned away to resume surveying the camp, she didn't notice the look he shot her through slightly narrowed amber eyes.

Raven opened her eyes slowly. At first she wondered why Tiger wasn't curled up next to her; then the night before came rushing back, and another wave of grief crashed over her. He wouldn't have survived the cold night alone; he was too small. For a moment she stared blankly at the roots above her head, wondering if it was even worth getting up. Her mate was gone, killed on the Thunderpath...a skirmish with Clan cats had resulted in two of her kits being stillborn...her only surviving daughter had frozen to death during leafbare...and now Tiger was gone, probably dead too. She stayed there, sprawled on one side with her pelt tangled and muddy, feeling as if all the strength had been drained from her limbs.

Tiger felt his eyes open of their own will; he gave a huge squeaking yawn, tucked his nose under his paw, and mumbled something along the lines of "who turned on the sun?".

"Good to see you're awake, Tiger" growled Wraith lowly as he sat watchfully beside the kit. He had remained watchful all through the night and through the storm. And now, it was time to continue the search. Rising to his feet, he stretched, yawning widely. Through the night he had considered the possible locations of Tiger's mother's den, and had narrowed it down considerably. He knew that it was a tree, and he knew that it was close to a Thunderpath. He obviously wasn't part of any clan, so that narrowed it down, since his mother likely wouldn't risk making her home in the territory of any of the clans. In addition to that, she was relatively close to where Wraith and his brother Dustpelt had made their home. that left only one place. "It's time we went to find your mother, kit" growled Wraith with a smile...

"Mama?" the kit mumbled sleepily. "We're gon' find mama?" He stumbled to his paws, yawning. He tried to walk forward and ended up staggering sideways a couple of steps, trying to get his eyes to open all the way but finding they wouldn't quite cooperate with him just yet.

The two brothers were on their way back to Thunderclan, taking the route that Tiberium and Mistpool had taken the day before. The dirt was moist and muddy puddles littered the landscape. "Ferallion?" Tiberium growled, still thinking about the dream from the stormy night. "I'm starting to think that...maybe we shouldn't join a clan...not after that..."
"What about leaf-bare?" the gray cat asked. "What would happen when we can't find a den to stay in?"
Tiberium paused, thinking it over. "We could ask Shadowstar if we could stay during leaf-bare. In return for shelter, we could offer some service to the clan, as loners." he suggested. "What kind of service?" Ferallion inquired further. "That's for us to find out if Shadowstar agrees to the proposition." Tiberium mewed.

"Just as soon as you can take two steps without stumbling away and falling over" growled Wraith with a chuckle as he watched the kit wobble on uncertain feet.....

The tabby kitten stood still for a few seconds, blinking, before bouncing forward, coming to a skidding halt on wet leaves. "Let's go!" he mewed, forgetting the scariness of being lost in the face of excitement to explore.

As the two loners trekked back to camp, the forest was awakening around them. The chirping of birds became much more noticeable, breaking the still morning air. Flashes of color contrasted sharply with the dark green and brown canvas of trees and plants. Butterflies fluttered about with their vibrant blue and purple wings adorned with green and black spots over the forest floor. Ferallion lunged at one as he passed underneath, his claws missing the fragile creature by a fraction of an inch for he didn't intend on catching the insect. As it ascended away from the gray tom, it was plucked from the air by a brown and white blur, a hungry bird catching its first meal of the day. Ferallion stared at where the butterfly once was as Tiberium continued walking on. They were almost at the camp, the dip of the ravine was just barely visible now. He heard the faint sounds as his brother jogged across the dampened soil to catch up to him.

Wraith chuckled in amusement as he began to walk in the direction of where he expected the kit's home to be. "Calm down, little one. To be eager is to be reckless. To be reckless is to be lost. You don't want to get lost again now, do you?" he growled with a smirk...
