Kane halted in mid-step, his eyes clenched shut at the mental interference. It was as if he were laying prone on the ground, looking straight ahead at what he was searching for... a vision. The image was somewhat discolored, as if it had been run through a reddish filter that distorted everything that passed through it. Straight lines bended slightly, the walls of surrounding office towers were concave and convex. The sky itself and all the objects suspended in infinity rolled and bobbed like the ocean's waves...

He shook his head. "Okay... not even five minutes after speaking to a ghost-head and I'm seeing things that my eyes did not. This is cause for alarm..."

The shed was... out of place for lack of a better term. It was made of a discolored wood that was gray-green with sizable gaps in between planks which made up its walls. It was certainly unfitting a structure to have at a base camp of another sufficiently advanced party, much less in the midst of all the monsters and shadows. It was after the door creaked open, did the reason for this become apparent.

Rebin was floored almost immediately afterwards, as if a barrier had suddenly materialized and rushed outwards. The rickety shack exploded in kind, splinters flying in every direction, consumed by the darkness, which then began to spiral around the machine revealed standing where the shack once did.

The black clouds turned into a vortex above the treaded robot, its blocky construction rife with all sorts of imaging cameras and other sensory arrays. It would have been a pearly white color, had its time in the Rift been more forgiving. As it was, however, grime and... blood turned it a sickly brown color. Its treads were half buried in the fleshy sludge that the group walked through on the way to the valley and it was clear the cretins in the veil were avoiding the construct, and with good reason.

"Get out of there!" Private's voice sounded over Dietrich's communicator. The readings he was getting from the pit spiked considerably in split seconds, and things had gone from dangerous to unimaginably life threatening. "The probe is a tether!"

"Hm?" asked Jacob as he eyed his comrade, raising a brow at the peculiar incident as he immediately did a vicinity scan, checking for threats they might have overlooked, though giving no physical hint he was doing so...

"Oh mein Gott!" responded Dietrich in shock as he grabbed Rebin off the ground, scrambling to retreat. The situation had suddenly become extremely dangerous. They were no longer dealing with a simple recovery mission. Remotely, he used a neural link to activate the Wustenfuchs' weapon systems, bringing them out of standby mode as he dove for the elevator, throwing Rebin in as he got in...

"It's..." Kane wanted to say "fine", but couldn't bring himself to. He couldn't simply shrug off the fact that he just had a psychic vision for no known cause. "Vitals are fine, bio-chemical balance is optimal... stress readings are low and my suit doesn't have any breaches," he said, listing off things that made up a full status report. "This area seems to be a hotspot of strange phenomena, though it does not seem to be psychologically induced." He raised his RC-launcher and began powering up the tool just in case he needed to use it; and started to move on.

Sure enough, as he continued through the plaza, from the corner of his eye he noticed a large construction that had fallen into severe disrepair. It was some kind of waterworks display, a huge concrete ring that looked like a Roman aqueduct in loop in the center of town. Most of it was now rubble, huge breaks in the structure culminating in huge piles at the base, stained various colors by water which had long since stopped flowing. What drew Kane's eye though, was the rusted gate which stood before a slope leading into concrete hole in the ground. Within the tunnel was a dinged metallic door with the sign "Sub-level Maintenance" barely legible underneath the dirtied glass that covered it, the lights which would have illuminated the words flickering...

Rebin was too much in shock to respond as he hit the elevator floor. The probe... the very thing they had come here to retrieve, the thing that they had worked so hard to try and obtain, had become a tether that needed to be destroyed. Was this cruel act of fate just blind coincidence that struck them, or was it orchestrated by some higher being that ruled this dimension, to torment at them for making the sole reason they came here something that wanted them dead...

"No... no..." Yukari muttered as she saw what was occurring through her night time scope. If this probe had become a tether... then what had become of the other one as well? Was it still in normal working condition, or had it become an anchor for the realm to use in its endless destruction of other worlds? This was the worst case scenario, one she had thought would never occur... Whatever information that probe held... was lost forever now that it had to be destroyed. It was far too dangerous to allow it to be as it was...

"No tech is 100% reliable. If you feel like your head just got slugged with a brick, odds are it did. To hell with what the diagnostics say" said Jacob as he paused mid-step, eyeing his comrade. "Don't tell me what the machine says. Tell me what YOU say" he said...

"What brick is able to pass through a helmet and show you exactly what you wanted to find?" Kane replied, at a loss for explanation. He was so assured when speaking to the phantom, but now it seemed to be more prophetic than anything menacing, in spite of its appearance. So the question Kane had to tackle now was, just why were he and Jacob warned?

Was it for this very same reason...?

Damian didn't even bother firing at the massive mechanical horror- he simply ran. With shocking speed, the armored humanoid jumped into the elevator, and quickly scrambled to his feet. The demolition expert quickly pulled the lever to head up, causing the metal doors to shut with a screech. The lift then began its painfully slow ascent to the upper level. Damian kept kept his grenade launcher trained on the massive machine, in the event it tried to fire upon them...

From the shadows, the form of the revenant could be seen, if one was bold enough, observing from the distance. Seeing his quarry beginning to flee, the shadowy creature melded into the darkness, and shot up towards the entrance to cut them off. They would not evade him so easily...

"A really bloody convenient one" said Jacob with a grunt. He didn't believe in coincidences. Something was quite obviously luring them in. "How many buildings do you think you could flatten in twenty seconds with that thing?" he asked, seemingly randomly, referring to the Relativity Coil Projector...

"Private, secure a path to the Wustenfuchs. Ve don't have much time before this entire facility is destroyed!" warned Dietrich as he signalled the mobile command centre outside the cave system, the vehicle moving in position to maximise its effective protective capability, as some systems were diverted to the engines to give them that small boost in speed that could well mean the difference between life and death...

"That would be one of those unfortunate things we will have to test in order to know for sure. Let's hope we don't have to test it while we're down below..." Kane said as he walked up to the gate. He used a single finger to work the latch into the upward position, where it snapped off. "... well then." Kane moved the gate aside with a grating screech, but without any further breakage.

"Acknowledged." Private retracted the mount on his rifle and shortened the barrel, making the top of the rise a choke point for... whatever he could kill with the weapon. Tendrils of darkness erupted from the sea of shadow as lighting seemed to flash in the oppressive clouds, which only continued to be swept up in a Rift storm within he valley, the rumbling it created sounding like something fresh out of hell itself...

The elevator soon screeched to a halt, the doors opening shortly after it reached the top of the valley.

"Let's go! Quickly!" Damian shouted into his communicator, as he began his sprint towards the entrance of the cavern.

Static could be heard filling the group's communicators once more, as their scanners also began to get fuzzy, signalling the revenant's rapid approach...

Rebin ran after Damian, racing for the exit as fast as he could. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Yukari running as well, her sniper rifle in her hands as she booked it as well. They both knew they had to get out of here as quickly as they could. It was far too dangerous to stay.

"Damn" said Jacob with the response he was given by Kane. Still, he knew he had a considerable amount of firepower with his explosives, and if the need arose, he was certain he could dish out a respectable amount of damage in a short time frame...

Dietrich bolted across the sludge-covered pathways of the forsaken cavern as he made his way towards the entrance. The lights of the Wustenfuchs glared through the cavern, lighting up the path and helping lead the soldiers to the exit. The colossal war machine's weapons shifted on their turrets before locking in the direction of the entrance, plasma Gatling guns spooling as they prepared to tear apart anything foolish enough to pursue the soldiers...

"If anything happens, we evacuate. This thing is good at making tunnels, that much we know." Kane stepped through the entrance and cautiously headed down the incline to the entrance. He investigated the tunnel access door, finding a pressure pad he had to press. Pushing a finger against it, Kane heard a barely audible clunking and saw strips of metal sliding towards the pad, which then spun. After a few rotations with ratcheting and clicking, a metallic thud was heard and the door swung open slowly with a long, drawn out squeak. "Welcome to waterworks," Kane said, stepping aside for Jacob and waving an arm with a dramatic flourish. "Hope you enjoy your visit!"

He turned tail and retreated without firing a shot, though he didn't get far. Private staggered, falling to his knees with one hand gripping side of his head. The noise! The sensors in his helmet which arguably made him more perceptive than any normal man could ever hope to be would prove to be his downfall as they overloaded his mind with disrupted data! The static was inside of him, traveling down his neural paths, locking his muscles with a horrible seizure; one where he was perfectly conscious but his senses were blurred into a uniform whiteness...

Damian was rapidly approachign the entrance to the cavern, his feet moving as fast as possible in order to escape. Ahead of them, Damian noticed something: the private had collapsed! Damian was about to run up to the private to help him up, but then, suddenly, he noticed a blackened shape slither forth from the shadows, as his scanners and communications array began to become almost deafeningly snowy. He couldn't make out the form of the creature too well, but he realized what it was: it was the revenant!

The static that assailed Private became completely overwhelming. A blackened shape, vaguely humanoid in basic structure, loomed over the form of the pseudo-human. If his nerves had not been rendered numb, Private would have been able to feel tendrils running along the exterior of the armor, rippling along his body, as the creature prepared to feast on him. However, a annoyed, almost bestial growl was emitted from the creature, as the tendrils disappeared, leaving a sticky, inky substance staining Private's armor. There was no sustenance to be had from this one...

Much to Damian's horror, he soon noted that the creature's red eye dilated slightly, before it turned to face him, Rebin, and Dietrich...

"Scheiße! Ve don't have time for this!" yelled Dietrich furiously as he pulled the trigger on his assault rifle, the barrel spinning up as a stream of glowing, white hot plasma rounds shot forward directly at the Revenant, the former Nazi Commander completely intent on sawing his way through, as meanwhile, the Wustenfuchs pinpointed both it and the fallen Private, marking them as hostile as the plasma Gatling cannons locked on...

"...Please be sure to visit the Gift Shop n'grab a commemorative tea-cosy on the way out" added Jacob with a smirk as he walked past the armour clad scientist, entering the chamber beyond. What he saw, was a gargantuan circular room, easily three floors high and the size of an average city block. water dripped down from an extended sewer system above, long since sterilised through lack of use, the mostly clear water pouring into a large pool in the middle of the chamber, before being funnelled off to various locations around the apparent city. On the walls around one of the tunnels in the chamber, pointing the direction the Felicity had brought them from, massive sheets of lichen could be seen growing rampantly; more so than anywhere else. Oddly however, the lichen looked dead and rotting. Only it's very edges were green, as though it was constantly fighting against whatever force ruled this place...

Re: Temporal Rift RPG

What Kane noticed initially were the bunches of pipes that converged in the center of the ceiling into one large glass tube. The tube extended down to the central pool, which had a much wider circumference than the tube itself. Had it not been for the stylized copper grating, the top of the basin would have been open at that top. A dim light shone beneath the surface, the shadows rippling through the grate and on the ceiling and walls.

Kane approached the tube, finding an instrument panel incorporated into the large machine that formed a toroid around the base. The gauges and displays revealed by the raised cover plate were static and unchanging, ironically enough. The maintenance area needed a fair bit of fixing in of itself. A quick look-over allowed Kane to infer the machine was a filtration device. Further irony: the machine had long since gone offline. A natural current in the system cleansed the water, though Kane's sensors picked up on the high concentration of Rift energy carried along the pipes.

"Hmm... would figure the piping would act like an insulator. Perhaps the main reservoir is exposed elsewhere..." Kane trailed off as the implication occurred to him. "... and located at the source of all this radiation... maybe we'll get the tea-cosies on the way there. Might look nice in the cockpit."

"Knowing what this stuff does, I'm putting my hopes in finding a few man eating bobble-heads myself" said Jacob as he tracked the pipes' paths, beginning to follow the source of the radiation, heading down one tunnel...

Kane chuckled and then said, "Bobble-heads possessed by poltergeists. Completely possible. This will look good when we send our next report home." He followed after Jacob, panning his head from side to side as he looked at the signs covered in dust, making out white arrows pointing straight up, down and to bends in the path ahead. He occasionally ran a hand over them to make out the specific area they were referring to, such as the generator room and other utilities. He had Felicity's mapping system mapping where he was relative to topside, but having some context inside the tunnel would help things along, he thought...

The plasma rounds ripped through the air, heat trailing behind them as they soared at inhuman speeds towards the revenant, before striking the eldritch beast in the side. But the plasma rounds seemed to do little to faze the shadowy abomination; instead, all they did was make it shift its attention to Dietrich. The bright lights from the plasma blasts, however, did their job, elicting a cry of pain from the revenant. Damian pitched in, firing his plasma revolver at the beast, until the combined power of the plasma rifle, the magnum, and the Wustenfuchs's headlights proved too much for the monster. The shadowy beast shot out of sight into the darkness, ashes being seen drifting up from its form as it dragged the comatose form of the private with it into the shadows...

Rebin and Yukari had fired a few shots at the creature, when it fled with the private, they stopped. "He's gone..." Rebin said silently. They had lost a man to that revenant... and with things already as bad as they were, this was quickly escalating. He wanted to go and rescue him, to get him back. He began to move to where the revenant had gone, but Yukari grabbed him by the shoulder and stopped him.

"Now's not the time. There's nothing we can do. We have to get going now. This place is about to go at any moment." She told him. Rebin stared at her. He knew she was right. If there hadn't been a tether here, they would probably go right in to rescue him... but right now, It was better for them to live than for all of them to be killed...
