A slim woman jogged down the fairly empty suburban street, wearing a white vest and shorts. A gray headband wrapped around her forehead and she had white earphones on, listening to her music player as she went down her morning route. She muttered the lines to the song as she went, letting her mind wander off. Her actions were almost automatic, come to the end of the block, run in place as she looked from left to right, then keep jogging when no cars were passing. It was just another ordinary day despite the extraordinary events of yesterday. A faint noise was audible despite the smooth jazz being blasted into her ear, but the jogger paid it no mind. She was just about to turn at a corner, when the white blur shot past her. By time she reacted, the speedy mutant was already gone. She jumped back, startled. A sharp gasp accompanied the action and she clutched her chest, her heart was pounding.
Kevin darted through the suburbs, the small houses blending into one another as he hurtled by. He was turning corners and pelting down streets and before he knew it he was at a cul-de-sac, a row of houses curving around the end of the road. Closing in on the end too fast to stop, the boy tried his luck and jumped, sheer momentum sending him flying over the roofs, his terrified yell echoing long after he found himself falling back to the the pavement several yards away. Instinctively, the boy reached for the nearest thing- the arced pole that held up a street light. His hands slammed onto the metal with a low, reverberating thunk and Kevin found himself swinging up and over before landing onto it in a crouch. He shook his hands, which were now afflicted with a dull ache, which was surprising in itself. He thought he had broken his wrist or had ruined the joint. Instead, he was mostly fine. He gazed at his palms, then at the ground 20 feet or so below. "Holy ******* ****" he muttered. Taking in a breath and going against his instinct to stay put on the lamp post, Kevin put his weight forward and dropped down to the sidewalk, landing in a crouch again at the base of the street lamp. He stood up and looked to where he once was, then to the passing people who had stopped in their tracks when they saw the costumed teenager's acrobatics. There were kids looking at him from across the way, mouth agape. One man was watering his lawn with a garden hose. The water was splashing off his sandal wearing feet. Kevin simply stood there for a minute or two, staring back at them before bolting off again, his blurry silhouette being his parting gift...
