Unbeknownst to the two mercs, David's rush into the room triggered an invisible laser tripwire along the floor just inside the door. In response, the steel door to the right opened with a muted hiss. Clearly, it was part of some security protocol, but since nothing else seemed to happen after that, whatever was inside the lab was probably gone. In fact, it was impossible to tell, as the inside of the long room the door had revealed was cloaked in pitch darkness...
Barnes paused when he heard a muted buzzing... coming from Jenkins' lab coat. As he turned, he said, "Um, what was that?" Jenkins seemed startled as well, pulling a small black device from his belt. "Oh, this? It's a personal pager I made, connected to my office's security system. It buzzes if there's an intruder. I guess our two little friends found my personal quarters, eh?" "Wait, your office? We could have had vital information from your computer!" Jenkins quickly shook his head. "Oh no, unfortunately, I had deleted the information when those other men attacked the facility to prevent it from being placed into the wrong hands. Government protocol and all that." Barnes stared hard at Jenkins, whose face was a complete blank. He had a good poker face, Barnes admitted. Finally, he sighed in frustration. "Well then, let's keep moving. We don't have any reason to linger any longer." As the group continued, Dodgson pulled up alongside Jenkins and whispered, "I thought you didn't have a security system installed yet..." Jenkins shrugged. "Well, nothing as exotic as using the animals as test subjects for protecting my office, like you suggested, but basic measures were in place. Of course, without security guards, they don't really matter, and it won't do those two much good anyway..." Jenkins shrugged it off, but Dodgson was still suspicious. He knew Jenkins well, and the man, even if no one else could tell, was at least a tiny bit agitated about this little revelation. We'll see soon enough, won't we?... Dodgson thought, continuing on...
