"Just blood samples of the subjects. Though I'm not sure whether I can't get that here. Are the blood test results and samples down here or up in the hospital?" said Atlas, the latter part of his statement directed towards the others in the room...

"Normally they're kept in the hospital itself," Lydia replied. "But you won't find any of our subjects' blood upstairs. Too risky. We did, however, draw blood from them before we started testing, and we can draw more when needed." She gestured to a small refridgerator, kept at a constant temperature of 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit, which held two vials of blood from everyone they'd injected the serum into, including the deceased. In some cases, there was one vial of healthy blood, and the second was full of liquid so dark red it appeared black even when held up to the light. Those had been taken when the scientists were sure the test subject wouldn't survive.

Atlas walked over to the refrigerator, opening it and retrieving two bottles from one of the patients. examining the dark tint on one of the bottles, he paused for a moment, thinking. "Any clue as to what caused this?" he asked, as he worked on theories that could explain the phenomenon...

Sam shook his head. "No idea," he said. "It was that color when we drew the blood from the subject." Lydia glanced at her pager again as it beeped, and said, "Hate to cut our chat short, but I'm needed." Looking at Atlas, she added, as she turned to go, "I'll do my best to get what you need down here."

Soon, Max had made it back to his apartment, tired and beaten up. He crawled back up the stairs where he was (surprisingly, there was no one else around but a single clerk to notice), and immediately disappeared into his chamber. He flipped on the television and, with that, fell asleep. He deserved some rest.... it's not everyday you fight a 20 foot battle mech...

Aya sighed with resignation. The crook wasn't anywhere closeby. Soon, the cop cars moved along, some continuing the hunt, but others, such as aya's a a few others, went back onto their daily routes...

Atlas considered the possibilities for a moment, finally nodding in silent acknowledgement. "Seems the red blood cells fused with something other than iron after the transformation set in. Were you using any kind of catalyst to help speed up the transformation?" he asked as he glanced around casually for an electron microscope. he'd need to look at this more thoroughly, and do get full blood tests done on the black vial...

The explorer stared blankly into the screens arranged around him, as if there were some inkling of information still hidden among the streams of light arranged into the alien text. The matter of mutation still evaded him, though in his study he came across a few noteworthy cases of the inexplicable. What humans called cryptids, paranormal occurrences and the likes appealed to his investigative nature and there were cases documented in the very area. His time on this world would not be short, it seems. There were other places to go and other matters to look into in addition to the meta-evolution of mankind.

“The archives await” Galaak muttered to himself. He looked from the consoles to the swamp land outside of his craft and remembered the Cephian he sent away. After a short scan of the vicinity, he pin pointed the shuttle “Status, Kala?” he messaged. Judging by the nominal readouts he was receiving, the small craft seemed to be back in full working order.

"Everything's in order, Galaak," Kala's gruffly mechanical voice answered over the com. "Bored, but I guess that was to be expected, wasn't it?"

"So I take it you've found a good place to hide. Excellent." Galaak said, though the explorer regarded the Cephian's words with well hidden confusion. How desensitized to the vastness of space did one have to be in order to be bored on an undocumented alien world? He would have laughed if he wasn't so shocked, but perhaps he was asking too much of Kala. While his motivations were to be commended, his militaristic upbringing in the primacy clearly had an impact on his perception on the universe. Without a mission and a target, he wondered how the interstellar fugitive would keep himself occupied...

"That I have," Kala replied. "Though having one of those humans stumble upon us would certainly be entertaining..."

"I beg to differ, actually. After what has happened already, further contact is out of the question" Galaak said abruptly, putting his previous thoughts aside. "If humans are detected in the vicinity an immediate relocation would be in order"

"Oh, alright..." Kala mumbled. "Guess I'll just have to resign myself to... what, categorizing the local fauna maybe? I don't think I even have the equipment to do that..."

"The council never expected me to have a partner in my mission. My supplies were only meant to support a singular explorer" explained the Ascatian as he sat back in his chair. Truly perplexing was Kala's case. Was this the price of being a hero? Exiled from his home and forced to be a derelict in the far reaches of the galaxy?

"Eh, I'm not much of a biologist anyway," Kala said, looking through the shuttle's viewport at the swamp outside. "I just shoot things..."

"Indeed. A fact that worries me greatly." Galaak replied, remembering the reckless abandon the slain Cephian displayed while in the battle suit. The possibility that Kala going mad from inactivity and going down such a path stirred worry in the Ascatian and from habit, Galaak fell into silent thought, planning a contingency for such a case...

"What, scared I'm gonna shoot up the place?" Kala said drily. "I may be a fighter, but I'm a disciplined fighter. There's a difference."

"I would only hope that you remain as such" was Galaak's simple response to Kala's statement, for he knew too well the danger of a warrior who turns their back on their code and standards. They were dangerous and unpredictable and willing to resort to drastic tactics to acquire their goals. Zakai was one of many to demonstrate this to the explorer. He would have to keep a keen eye on Kala to make sure he doesn't start this dark descent... lest he was forced to count his chance acquaintance as an enemy.

"I used to be special operations," Kala replied. "You don't just ignore that kind of training, you know. Cephian special warfare groups have never broken ranks in my lifetime..."

"You wouldn't be here if you hadn't broken your rank, Kala. Likewise, it is that very training along with that suit that brings the danger" Galaak said, sighing. "I do not think you will turn so easily. At the same time, I refuse to take chances given the stakes at hand"

"I have never broken ranks in combat," Kala replied hotly. "Maybe I decided that I needed to change where my loyalties lie, but that doesn't mean I lack discipline."
