No, i didn't really like it either. I thought the storyline was quite good though. Zidane wasn't that good as a main charater either in my opnion. They tried to remake ff7's love trinagle with Zidane, Garnet/Dagger and Eiko. Didn't work at all.
I didn't like Freya either. What actually was she? a Rat?
And now, they are milking FFVII a little more with Dirge of Cerberus and the (rumored) FFVII about Zach...

The main reason why final fantasy hasn't died out IMO, is because of the rebirth of different characters each game.
Different characters, different storyline and different setting. But you can tell they're all final fantasties.
