Grievous led Serephir to another landing pad, this one with a Trandoshan shuttle. They met up with Lissarhk has they did so, who was obviously relieved to see the cyborg again. As they walked into the shuttle, Grievous explained, "Now, keep in mind, the event we are about to witness is purely voluntary, now that Geonosis is a part of the TGDA."

"Saying that, you make it sound like the TGDA pre-dated Geonosis' membership..." commented Serephir, as the ote two guards who had been assigned to watch Lissarkh followed onto the shuttle...

"More that this particular event we are going to see was a staple of Geonosian society long before I came along," replied Grievous, as the shuttle rose off the pad quietly...

"I see...and what exactly is this tradition about?" he asked...

outside the atmosphere, over Geonosis, one of the Vardian ships released a dropship that hovered in the atmosphere monitoring the ships coming from Trandosha, planning to move in just ahead of Grievous' shuttle and meet tem when they arrived...

The shuttle rumbled as it left atmosphere, and Lissarkh explained for Grievous. "Gladiatorial combat, to put it simply."

"And the Gladiators?" he asked. he was a man who didn't take pleasure in violence exept in rare cases. his life as a Sardanian Soldier had left a mark...and there was little chance it'd ever fade...

"Usually Geonosians who wish to prove themselves, and occasionally Trandoshans as well," Lissarkh hissed. "They usually fight each other, or large animals of some sort. Trandosha can't really do anything about outlawing it, since it's practically a part of Geonosian culture, but we can at least make it so that it isn't slaves fighting against their will."

Serephir nodded interestedly. "Hmm....I remember Gladiatorial fights being customary back when the Sardanian Empire ruled. they had different kinds of fights.

the 'Maslukha', or, for lack of a better translation, Slaughterhouse Fight, was named such because it usually involved unarmed men and ferocious animals. the people chosen in these fights were most often rebels who had been captured and kept alive, solely for these events.

then there was the 'Hisab' fight, or Judgement fight, named because it was used to judge the fate of prisoners who the Emperor deemed worthy of being given a chance at redemption, usually due to admiration of their determination or strength, which, with the right tools, could be turned to serve him. it was a 2 round battle that started out with the man against a Sibator, a feline creature with massive claws, venomous fangs and a reptilian tail, armed only with a sword, a spear and some very low grade leather armour that was all but useless. the second round would be to pit the fighter against Officers in the Sardanian Army. the Officer was typically armed with whatever sword he had been granted upon promotion to his current rank, while the Gladiator typically was given a standard, somewhat blunt saber. it cut with alot more difficulty than most Officers' blades. the people chosen for these fights were usually either soldiers who refused to follow orders or otherwise disrupted the Army's movements and operations, or citizens who helped the rebels and resistence. there was a fine line between them, and the ones put into the Slaughterhouse Fights. it was rare that anyone would make it to the final round. it was all but unprecedented that the gladiator succeeded in the final round. it was mostly just the way to sate the Sardanian religion's thirst for blood. I was a survivor of one of these fights, thrown into it because of my prior support for the resistence. i had caused such serious damage that the Emperor saw fit to assign his most skilled and capable Commander as my opponent
" he explained, almost lost in his memories. it was the first time he had gone through a full recount of what had occured to him back then, most of it having been lost due to what had happened next...

Grievous crossed his arms, obviously interested. "Sounds like the Sardinian Empire wasn't the friendliest group, was it?" He knew next to nothing about Serephir's home, and the more he found out, the better.

"Hardly. my fight with that Officer would've been a failure....the only thing that saved me was the....well...somewhat unique fighting style i had to use just to hold off his blows. 3 swords at a time. unheard of and supposedly impossible for a human with only two hands. to use it i had to hold the third sword in my teeth. strange to say the least, but it was the only way i was able to block the immensely fast blows the Officer was sending at me. against someone as powerful as that, i suppose they let me have the swords just to give them something to laugh at while their Officer cut me to pieces. imagine the look on the Emperor's face when the very sword he and his men were ridiculing as some peasant's foolish idea of more meaning better, slit the Officer's jugular after the other two swords acted as a diversion. I have never heard of a human using a 3 sword style before...well, aside from my father. in any case, the reward for defeating their top officer was...disappointing. they took me into the Sardanian Secret Service's Headquarters, and proceeded to unceromoniously knock me unconscious. what followed was the mother of all brainwashings. they erased, or rather, buried, all my memories, and implanted a false past over it. as you could expect, when i woke up, i didn't remember a thing of what went on. the fights, the resistence i had assisted...everything. afterwards they started a ritual to 'enhance' me. to turn me into the kind of fighter that could one day act as the Emperor's personal guard. it was the origin of the powers you've probably noticed i wield. manipulation of my surroundings, wings that seem to sprout out of thin air, and so on. i was to be the first of an Elite force meant to crush any who dared cross the Emperor. they then put me in the position of the Officer i had slain. after a 3 week crash course in the military, i was entered into service. with it, i was given this" he said, pointing at the sword on his back...

"So how do you remember all this, if you were brainwashed?" asked Lissarkh, equally curious as her uncle.

Serephir smirked, then continued. "for the sword to be used correctly, another ritual had to be done...but seeing as i was the first of my kind, they failed to realise that the actions taken in the ritual would effect my memory...it was like binding two souls together. and that...reversed most of the brainwashing they had done. i still didn't have a purpose, was somewhat lost. the basics of my position were practically hardwired into my mind, but other than that, i was lost. a few days afterwards, i was sent to lead a raid on a rebel camp far out in the desert. the terrain and weather made it impossible for most to cross, and the survivors of my unit were crushed by the well prepared and well armed rebels. and me, being young, naive and not quite as skilled as i should have been, or used to the powers available to me, was captured. disarmed and shackled, they proceeded to question me. after a while, they began to show me the horrors of what my Leaders were doing to the people. it didn't take long for me to realise how wrong my actions were, and quickly changed sides. what little remained of the brainwashing faded, and thus, the birth of the man you now know as Serephir. what followed was an all out civil war with me leading them...and the destruction of the Empire that caused our people untold amounts of agony. out of the ashes, the nation now simply known as the Vardian Empire was born. a democratic, constitutional monarchy whose people have as much a say in it's future as it's ruler"...

Grievous chuckled. "That sounds like what I had to go throguh to create the TGDA." Lissarkh was looking around the shuttle as he spoke, then stopped, spotting a shadow in the far corner, which swiftly disappeared behind a crate that was in a corner of the shuttle' bay. "Uh... guys? We have an unwanted guest."

Serephir glanced at Lissarkh, drawing his pistol. "Grievous? how tough is the inside of this shuttle?" he asked, wondering whether the shuttle could take what he intended to do...

"Wait a second..." said Grievous, staring at the crate. After a moment, he saw the form move out from behind the cover, and the cyborg leaped to attack, only to stop when Lissarkh shouted, "Wait! It's friendly!" The Covenant Engineer, having obviously snuck aboard the shuttle earlier for some reason, floated right past the General, looking at Serephir's pistol intently. Grievous shook his head. "That thing again? Don't worry Serephir, it won't harm you."

"What is it?" he asked as he holstered his handgun, a transparent rectangular visor rolling out of an extended part of his active armour, in front of his left eye, allowing him to scan the machine thoroughly with Infrared and gamma-ray scanners...

The Engineer floated even closer, obviously mechanical to Serephir's scanners, but outwardly, it looked completely organic. "It's a Covenant creature, I think," said Lissarkh. "But I don't detect any signs of life coming from it."

"It's a machine. that's why" said Serephir. "you don't happen to have any political problems with The Covenant, do you, Grievous?"

Grievous shook his head. "I hardly know of them, other than when they attacked Trandosha. They've been making some incursions into TGDA space, but it hasn't been anything we can't handle. That's how we picked up this one. So far, it seems perfectly benevolent, and all it really does is fix things. " The Engineer poked Serephir's armor with a tentacle, which split into many fine cilia as it prodded the suit curiously.

Serephir eyed the machine for a moment, equally curious as to what it was doing...
