'I check up on the backgrounds of the people I am sent to take care of,' Arsenic replied. 'Sometimes I find I've been lied to; more often, the targets have done something worthy of death. And being telepathic often helps as well.'

Septimus nodded. "Sounds like a decent way to be sure. but what of the ones you don't kill. have you never been hunted by former employers wanting you dead for not doing what they asked?" he growled in thought...

The elf's lips twitched with amusement. 'I've been yelled at a fair few times. Been threatened with death, the usual. Some even tried to kill me in my sleep.' He shook his head. They should know better than to try and murder an assassin. I let them live, with warnings, telling them I refuse to kill a man or woman who doesn't deserve it. Enough of my fellows agree with me on this that the higher-ups can't kick me out of their guild either; they'd lose half the others who work for them too.'

"Ugh" Desrium muttered to himself as he looked at his hands. They were red with blood, redder still because of the reflection of his eyes in the small crimson pools. Thin lines of the blood ran along the grooves of the armor, dripping onto the ground and onto other plates. His sword was even worse. He had rinsed it and the sheathe off in the stream and rested them aside until he was ready to move onto the Bird-horse. Now the blue-gray blade rested beside him in a dark puddle, gleaming in the sunlight. "An unpleasant part of the process..." He said as he grabbed the hilt of the blade and stood up, making his way to the stream to rinse off his blade and armor. While getting them was a messy affair, he had managed to get lean meat from the animal's shoulders, fore limbs and hindlimbs. Next to the body was a spread out pelt that was slick black. Desrium would see if he could make some sort of pouch out of it to carry any left overs. In a neat pile next to that were a bunch of flat gray and black rocks that he found near the stream. They had an unusual sheen to them, which made Desrium suspect they could the right type of rocks to start a fire with...

"An assassin, eh?" Tetto'eko said, turning away from where he saw the figure and refocusing on the conversation. "Hardly a surprise, I suppose. Elves are quite popular with assassins' guilds, aren't they?"

Arsenic nodded, replying, 'Yes. Many of us have talents that the guilds are on the lookout for.' He stretched, working out the kinks in his upper back and shoulder muscles.

"An assassin's guild with morals....that's a new one on me" rumbled Septimus with a chuckle. glancing at the dragoness, he growled "And what of you, Aviva?"...

Aviva cocked her head. "As you might imagine, the Extraxl are a...secretive race. I cannot tell you everything; but I will tell you what I can. As Arsenic asked; what would you like to know?"

Some time later, Desrium was sitting at the makeshift spit, the slabs of meat he had carved from the Bird-horse skewered on the thin branch. He rested his sword across his lap with the jagged edge pointing upwards. The very end of the blue-gray blade was held over the flattened shrub. The armored being held the sheathe in his left hand and in the right, a rock with a sharp point jutting out from its side. He ran it down the blade, a scraping noise audible as Desrium pressed hard upon it. After a few minutes of repeating the process of running the rock down the sword, sparks sprayed as the thin, sharp edge shattered. The bright orange scatter landed amongst the leaves and branches of the shrub and Desrium instinctivly pulled his blade back carefully, not wanting to do something that coud extinguish the flames before they started. He shifted about so that he was laying down with his head close to the shrub, gently breezing onto the embers. Shortly after, a light gray smoke started to rise from the tinder, and soon the shrub was ablaze with a flickering fire. While one would have been proud of this achievement, after being thrust into the unknown under strange circumstance, Desrium wasnt. It seemed so... easy. There was no struggle to it. Everything he needed to know just came to him. He didnt learn any of this, yet he knew it and executed what he knew. Such simplicity was just...boring. Would there a time where he came across something that he would have to apply himself to overcome, or would this..."adaptive learning" make his very mind...obsolete?
"What purpose do my thoughts have if there is nothing to think about?" The armored figure asked himself, picking up his blade and sliding it into the sheathe on his back. "I might as well be...be-" A pause as the word found its way into his vocabulary. "...I might as well be a machine" He said grimly. What a cruel conundrum. A lifetime of knowledge that could be called upon when needed, but having no recollection of his life. He had no challenge as of yet, nothing to strive for except for finding the meaning of his existance, which in itself was nothing but a bunch of questions with no answers. It was a disheartening prospect, to think that he had nothing to live for. Desrium started turning the spit, trying to focus on something else.

Aviva flicked out her forked tongue in thought. What should she start with; her own life, or information on her species? Deciding, she growled, "An explanation for an explanation; I will tell you a bit about us first. Our own hierarchy isn't quite as complex as yours. We cannot use magic, but that doesn't mean we are helpless. Our leaders are chosen by birth; the Matris and Sator raise their first-born to lead once they have passed. Usually by the time they are gone, that hatchling is fully-grown and has found a mate, so there is no dispute over who will be leader. Only a few times in our history has there been a fight over the matter, and it is usually because the grown hatchling decides they do not want to lead, or dies before it reaches maturity, and the Matris and Sator have no other child to pass the legacy on to." Her tongue flicked out again, glinting a faint iridescent green as the light struck it at just the right angle. Arsenic, seeing this, hid a smile. How often Aviva's poison had been useful to him...he'd come to ask her for a vial of it every time he ran out of his own toxins.

"Interesting" hissed Septimus as he curled his tail around his hind legs and sat back on his haunches. as he showed his chest scales, the light seemed to play with the shades, the dominant colour being light orange, having a creamy, almost pearl-like lustre, though various shades of turqoise, sky blues, royal blues and purples could be seen at varying angles. "What about you, yourself?" he growled curiously. by the sounds of the Extraxl, they were isolated and secretive, keeping to themselves like the Hueilin. how would Aviva end up out here?

"I was one of the few who wanted to see more of the world," Aviva growled, cocking her head. "I left to wander for a while, with the intent of visiting now and then. My fellows weren't happy about it, but let me go so long as I swore to keep quiet about certain things." She shrugged. "I did, and have never broken my vow of silence. For a time, being on my own was everything I imagined and more."

Aviva allowed herself a bitter grin. "I got into a fight with another dragon," she explained. "He injured my wing - broke one or more of the bones in it so I couldn't fly. And he tore up the muscles in my foreleg badly and fractured the bone, so I couldn't walk. If Arsenic hadn't found me, I likely wouldn't have survived."

Septimus cringed at the story. "An unpleasant experience....what happened to the other Dragon?" he growled...

Aviva looked away, smile fading. "I told you the Extraxl aren't helpless, even though we don't have the ability to use magic. And the reason for that lies in our mouths. A fast-acting venom in our teeth and saliva. A bite from one of us can kill in seconds, or minutes, depending on how big the creature is." She shook her head. "He didn't suffer for long. And his body provided me with food until Arsenic found me and nursed me back to health."

"As much as my morals try and keep me from such thoughts, i wish he had suffered for longer" growled Septimus, figuring out what he had seen earlier when he caught a glimpse of the dragoness' tongue. it was black. but was coated with poison. "How did caring for you fit in his schedule of assassination? couldn't've been very convenient for either of you" he hissed curiously...
