"Eh. This ship needs its captain, Dietrich," Damian stated. "Gotta fulfill my duties, and make sure these guys don't blow themselves up, y'know?"

Damian wrapped his arms around both Yukari's and Rebin's necks, in a somewhat ridiculous gesture of friendship, before he went to go sit at the helm of the APC....

"Pardon the intrusion Commander Dasler," Private stated as he stepped into view from the inner reaches of the Streitaxt. Standing at attention, he reported "my investigation of the combat platform has turned up a negative for anything that may be hiding inside. The Wustenfuchs has not been infiltrated."

He dropped the salute and took on a more casual stance when he spoke to Yukari: "We are in a situation of constant danger. There is no time to be wasted eating when an injection serves the same purpose, faster. There is nothing sick about it."

At the same time, he had to wonder; could he still take the shots? After his extensive mutation, the shots he took for nourishment could have turned into a poison...

"Data read points to some kind of Metal Muncher...except this one is different. A lot different, actually." Kane said. "I can't even tell if it's supposed to be a member of the same species or something else entirely!"

Lumbering down the cracked road, the black scaled, silver plated creature went, panning its broad head back and forth. Azentoth had recently detected the energy from the two explorers, but was initially drawn to the sound of battle. The crumbling buildings and the sound of weapons being fired was a calling card to the saurian creature, as it had been before in the swamp...

...but things had changed since then. Where it once lacked arms, the creature had assembled its own weaponry, integrated from its prey. Two large, short barreled blasters hung from its torso, the drab metal emerging from the creature's scaly hide in some impossible transfusion of animal and machine...

"Normal food is a luxury military personnel cannot afford. Especially not here" responded Dietrich in response. "Before the injections, ve used to eat long-lived food that tasted like filth. It damaged the morale of the troops so much that ve had to revise it, and develop a new system. Hence, the injections" he explained. Turning to Private, he nodded. "Excellent, private. It appears ve are ready to get undervay then"...

"What do you think the odds are it'll go after the plant instead of us?" asked Jacob as he blew away another tendril that was moving to attack him...

"Sir." Private replied, saluting once more before returning into the Wustenfuchs.

"Normally I'd say something like a Metal Muncher would probably go after the two guys in...armor...buuuut then again, it is in Twitchy's turf. If the hit is as major as it appears to be, then you'd have a classic case of top tier rivalry in an ecosystem..." Kane said. He had garnered the strange plant's aggression by taking a sample of it. How would it react to the new arrival?

He didn't have to wait long for his answer. As the data grew in quantity and became more conclusive, Kane felt the ground quaking, heard bits of rubble clattering down the concrete faces like pebbles tumbling down a mountain.

"Get out of sight!" he said to Jacob, vaulting over the wall he was ducked down at. He peeked his head up to see just what it was that was approaching. Down the street, the dark mass emerged from around the corner, swinging its head around. Roughly half of its body was still hidden behind the destroyed structure, but Kane had already gotten a good estimate for its size. A bit over twenty feet long and ten feet tall; this thing wasn't incredibly impressive in size...but what did impress him was the fact it was bonded with inorganic materials. From what appeared to be armored plating and advanced weaponry, this thing was some kind of cyborg!

"Well, let's get on the road then," Damian said over the radio to Dietrich and the private, before he cut communications. He then turned to Yukari and Rebin.

"You two, close the door, will you?' Damian asked. "We're gonna be heading back to that canyon, I assume, and I certainly don't want anything deciding to climb in while we're on our way over..."

With that, Damian started the APC up once more, ready to head out with the massive tank....

Yukari, being the closest to the door, closed it tight. She was still trying to wrap her mind around anyone living without enjoying solid food. TO her, it was an alien concept that didn't sit right with her. She'd take cruddy MRE's over nutrient injections if it meant having something solid to actually eat. If humanity in her realm were to go that direction... she didn't want to think about it.

The warning was taken perhaps a bit too literally. As Kane vaulted over the wall, Jacob literally disappeared, stealth systems going online as he leapt at a wall, clinging to the uneven, damaged surface and swinging a leg sideways, up and into the window of one of the buildings, pressing his back against the inner surface of the wall as his vision mode shifted, allowing him to see the interaction without exposing himself, stealth system going offline once more...

The massive plant-animal hybrid rumbled angrily at this invasion of its space. The smaller creatures were like flies to it, posing no threat, and thus, they were ignored. This however, was somewhat more of a problem. Almost immediately, manholes began bursting all the way down the street, more tendrils emerging from beneath the street, some looking like blooming flowers, others, looking like thorny vines which whipped and lashed threateningly. It looked as if the entire area had come to life, the wild plantlife emerging from every artificial orifice this street seemed to have, and some that it didn't. "We might want to get out of here before our escape routes are cut off" advised Jacob over a private channel, as he began to make his way through whatever path he could find, through narrow corridors and across gaps between high-rise buildings...

As the APC's doors sealed shut, a powerful roar emerged from the tank, the vehicle's treads glowing dimly with a deep purple-blue glow, looking almost as if the treads were made of blacklights, the vehicle rising off the ground as the treads tilted outwards slightly, the lower end protruding further than the upper, the tank beginning to accelerate surprisingly fast for its size. Within, Dietrich was taking stock of what resources were available in the vehicle. He noted the armoury seemed untouched, several weapons visible on racks, and, as the Wustenfuchs' databases revealed, an immeasurable wealth of schematics for various weapon designs, most of which were common in his homeworld, though a few were apparently prototypes that would require ETF Technology and knowledge of the Rift to effectively use...

"Might?" Kane responded, a short burst of nervous laughter punctuating his emphasis. This area had become far too dangerous to do his studies. In fact, it seemed the other creatures caught on to this a long time ago. Whereas the smaller Metal Munchers roamed the streets not too long ago, none of them were to be seen now. All for the best, given the situation. Kane proceeded to go on a roundabout route through alleys and skeletal structures, barreling through the few sparse rooms he came across...

Azentoth let out a screeching cry in return to the aggression. The saurian beast reared up, thumped its tail against the asphalt with an echoing thwack and flexed its "arms", the guns swiveling around on the hardpoints they were connected to. The broad-headed Metal Muncher's lips peeled back, its silvery teeth exposed in a feral snarl.

Private's voice came from the entrance to the armory. "Minerva's work," he began, looking over Dietrich's shoulder at the broad, mint green terminal he was using. "before the attack...she was working on a way to take advantage of the energy that...mutated me. I am not certain of the technical aspects, she did not speak to me much and when she did I barely understood..." the young soldier explained, trailing off as he realized the last of the combat technician's work would go mostly unfinished...

"I believe there may be hope yet for her vork. But that is a matter for another time" responded Dietrich thoughtfully. He had taken some preliminary courses on the workings of ETF technology. He was required to do so in order to be given the Wustenfuchs. Being commander of the base meant that he had to know, at least generally, the workings of every bit of equipment under his control. Perhaps, using that and the Neural Comprehension Implants, he could get enough of a command to further the technology? It was a matter for another time. For now, he had to move on with the current objective; retrieving the probes for his comrades. "Private, Come vith me. I believe it is time I updated you on our situation" he said as he turned away from the armoury, the doorway hissing shut as he departed for the cockpit...

Preoccupied with the beast, the plant seemed to completely forget the two relatively miniscule targets, the entire block seeming to rumble as the plant writhed and convulsed, a volley of barbs being fired at the metalovoric saurian...

Private cocked his head but otherwise did not question his commanding officer. He was going to get an explanation soon enough, there was no point in delaying it. He walked across the way with his boots lightly thumping against the metal floor, passing through the doorway and then finally taking a place beside the strategy table.

Azentoth lowered himself to the ground, several barbs passing harmlessly over him while others deflected off of his scaly hide and metal plates. Though the damage was lessened, the acid laced projectiles still had their effects, a hot vapor rising from the Metal Muncher's form with a sizzling hiss. Snarling in irritation, Azentoth swung himself around as he began to open fire, the barrels of his guns sliding back into the bulk of the weapons when they sent large globs of orange plasma soaring across the street at the bases of tendril clusters, vaporizing many when they exploded with a deep growl and crackle...

An angered groan shook the street as jets of acid were fired from all sides, the flower-like formations filled with stamen-like extensions, their ends looking like fire-hose nozzles, streams of the semi-transparent green substance being sprayed at the armoured beast as even more tendrils burst out of the doorways of buildings at street level. Jacob meanwhile was long gone, at this point well over two blocks away, having used his Anti-grav and thrusters in unison to speed up his retreat even further. He kept track of Kane's location however, making sure he was never too far away to reach should the situation require it...

"Ve have been abandoned by our superiors. There is no chain of command for us to contact. From now on, ve are on our own" started Dietrich firmly. "Since the gatevay to our home realm has collapsed, so has our hope of returning. Though I assume you should have been able to deduce this yourself. Vhatever endeavour ve undertake from here onvards is our own. I cannot force you to follow me. That is your choice. Neither can I force mein authority on you. Vhatever you do from now onvards is entirely of your free vill. I vill not force you to do anything. For now, I have decided to assist the three you met moments ago vith their own mission. They are searching for probes sent in by their superiors, und following that, they intend to hunt down the anchors their home-realm has to this place, und destroy them" he concluded. He had kept the Federation's abandonment of them under wraps until now, for fear that knowledge of it would spark chaos and anarchy amongst the ranks of the army. But now, there was no longer any point...

Azentoth broke off into a run at that, charging down the street with the road cracking beneath his talons as he went, escaping most of the corrosive shower but heeding the indirect warning the encounter provided. His foe was enormous and their reach was expansive...

Private looked down at his gloved hands -the hands whose flesh he would never see again- and shook his head. All of the effort, the sacrifice, the valor of all who now were deceased...it was for nothing. His comrades fell fighting with unyielding courage for a world which had abandoned them long before. It was an infuriating revelation. Though he could not see it, Private felt his flesh beginning to burn with anger. He balled his hands into fists and held them rigidly at his sides, refusing to lose his temper.

"The others and myself were sent on this mission under your leadership, Commander Dasler. We pledged to serve, and I will continue to do so despite the circumstances." said the soldier evenly. "We have a new mission. What are your orders?" he asked, standing at attention.

Dietrich smiled behind his gasmask, relieved that Private had not lost his composure. It had taken every ounce of his own patience not to explode in anger when he was spoken to by their superiors for the last time, as he had the weight not only of his own life and future, but that of all his men, on his mind. It was only through reminding himself that he had no power over the situation that he had calmed. To know that Private Miradi could keep cool in spite of that revelation brought him a peace of mind he hadn't had since before the mission had begun. "Very vell Private. For now, take stock of your eqvipment, rearm yourself und prepare for on-foot operations. Our destination is a cave in a valley some 20 kilometres from our current location. Our objective is to retrieve a number of probes from vithin, for our allies to gather vhat data they can from them. Ve vill act as escort und assistance as required. Understood?" he explained firmly...

"Acknowledged" Private replied, saluting before he left the cockpit, heading for the crew accommodations where he had left his supply pack.

Kane came to a halt several blocks away from where the altercation took place, assured of his and Jacob's safety from the metal eating creature, but not so certain when it came to Twitchy. This entire city could have been its domain, growing beneath the pavement, winding through pipes and buildings.

"I don't think there's any way around it, Jacob," Kane said as he sent an order to his vehicle. "I'm calling Felicity in for mobile evac. Try not to get Twitchy's attention until then, eh?"

At the speed the group was travelling at, it woudn't take long at all for the group to return to the valley. The barren landscape was all that served to accompany the group as they sped across the riftworld to return to the valley from wence they had once come from. Damian noted that darkness seemed to be lingering over their destiend valley, far off in the distance. Great- just what they needed. Darkness. While Damian realized the strategic advantages of the dark- namely going largely unnoticed by threats such as that tigrex or by the humanoid lifeforms that inhabited the cave with the probes- but also brought about many new dangers. Not only was vision greatly decreased (though night vision helped alleviate this issue, as did the scanners), but it also introduced new threats to the groups... namely that ghost-like entity that had badgered them early on in their ventures into the riftworld. Damian soon spoke into the radio to alert Dietrich and the private of what he has seen.

"Head's up, gentlemen," Damian warned. "Looks like some kind of cloud formation has gathered over the valley we are heading into. Be on high alert at all times."

Dietrich was already scanning the cloud, readings coming back on the screens as he felt the ice cold grip of fear around his heart. "Gentlemen...brace yourselves. There is a chance this...is related to vhat brought down our base...Signature is very similar....Rift energy...blended in vith that of that accursed sludge...that Decay....and something else I am unfamiliar vith" he warned, immediately placing all the vehicle's weapons on full alert...

"Oh, don't worry about me. I'll manage. You're the one you should be worried about, what with that giant bucket of bolts you call armour and all" responded Jacob warningly, moving through an office complex, heading down a hallway towards his companion, neurally balanced on the Stealth System, practically waiting for a reason to disappear...

"Getting into position for field recon, Commander." Private reported. He was at the uppermost section of the Streitaxt battle tank, climbing up a ladder that ran through the height of the cavernous turret. At the end of the climb, the soldier turned the circular latch and swung the thick door upwards into an airlock chamber. A few more rungs popped up at that and Private climbed into the extra chamber where he closed the hatch and then proceeded to open the secondary one directly overhead, climbing up the ladder which deployed from it onto the Wustenfuchs' hull.

He was a tiny figure amidst giant guns and other offensive arrays, such as the rocket pods swiveling around on their fixtures. The landscape rolled on past as the tremendous contraption of armor and weaponry made its way into the unnatural fog. His suit's sensors feeding directly to Dietrich's input, Private's optic equipment began to scan the anomaly as he pulled his gun in his hands...

"Oh, like I needed reminding!" Kane joked as the drone of Felicity's engines grew louder on the wind. Out from the dark skies, the orange and black craft appeared, dipping down beneath the rooftops and skimming across the street. When it was a few yards away from the two, Felicity's nacelles directed their thrust forwards and the ship came to a sustained hover, the air rippling around the exhaust and dust being blown outwards from underneath.

Kane ran over to the Felicity as its exterior door opened, a short thruster pulse sending the hulking suit of armor into the transport...

Both Rebin and Yukari simply nodded, preparing their weapons. Whatever it was they were heading toward, they were prepared and ready. They had to be ready. In this sort of place, it was a wise thing to be alert at all times...

"Ugh, crap," Damian grumbled into the communcations. "Just what we needed.... more rift monsters!"

Damian soon primed the APC's weapons systems, and turned to Rebin and Yukari.

"Heh, what'd you expect for us by this point?" Damian joked. "We seem to have ALL the wonderful luck..."

Before long, the convoy was descending into the valley, the Wustenfuchs' main gun trained on the cloud as it analysed it's make-up. Dietrich was busy running a bunch of theories and models on the cloud and it's origins, considering how to get rid of it and its source. He was fairly certain the main guns could destroy whatever appeared in his path, but in this place, nothing was ever certain. An hour ago the sun was setting, and yet now, it was rising once more. Not only that, but a storm cell was approaching from the East, despite the wind direction going directly against that. It was infuriating to think about. And so he decided not to. Instead, he focused on analysing the information the Streitaxt brought in, and figuring out how best to go about dealing with it should it become a problem when they arrived...

Jacob was there almost the moment the Felicity's doors opened, leaping out of a window in a nearby high-rise as his Anti-Grav systems kicked in, the man almost literally gliding across the gap and stepping into the Felicity's airlock softly, light seeming to distort around his form as narrow orange vents appeared in his suit, cooling down and fading as they disengaged, before closing once more...
