Arsenic settled into a comfortable chair, legs crossed, sipping from a mug of herbal tea. Vix sat across from him, scratching behind the ears of a golden tabby cat who yawned widely and began to purr. "You'd best watch your back, Arsenic," she said after a moment of comfortable silence. "There are rumors that some people would do anything to see you dead." He waved a dismissive hand. 'Old clients who didn't like that we denied their requests,' he said. 'They've tried to kill me before, and failed.' "Yes. But now they're going to further lengths." Vic leaned forward, her green eyes narrowing. "Hiring assassins from other guilds to kill you." He shook his head. 'Vix. I appreciate the warning, really. But there is a reason they haven't succeeded yet.' His lips twisted wryly. "I know, I know. You're more paranoid than a cat that's had its tail stepped on one too many times. Still - be careful." Looking at her, Aviva's words came back to him. "She fancies you." Did Vix view him as more than a friend? More than a brother? He frowned, but nodded. 'I always am, Vix,' he said more gently than he meant to. She hesitated, as if there were something more she wanted to say, but then nodded and said, "I have some dishes to wash. Call me, if you need anything." She stood and left the room, leaving him alone with his thoughts. He gazed into the fire, half-hoping the dancing flames would yield some answers to the questions that now plagued him.
