Barnes silently cursed the exposed canyon. Not because of potential predators spotting them (stealth was barely an option by this point), but because of the sun. With little vegetation on the canyon floor, except the occasional shrub, the mercs were constantly pounded by the sun's hot rays. Thankfully, it was already beginning to set on the horizon, casting a brilliant orange glow over the island...
By the time Sue had gotten to the crashed tram in the canyon, there were no humans left in the area. In fact, even the Deinonychus were in hiding, using the rocks and evening gloom to give themselves some semblance of cover. A Tyrannosaurus would more than likely ignore animals as small as them, but they weren't willing to take any chances. Sue nosed the wreckage with her massive reptilian head, picking up the scents of the mercs that saturated the contraption. With a furious roar, Sue viciously headbutted the tram's cockpit, knocking it off its hinge and sending it rolling a short distance with a loud crash. The Rex stomped past the wreckage, giving the dented cockpit a quick, almost casual kick, knocking it to the side as she stormed past...
By the time the mercs heard the roar, they were almost at the end of the canyon. However, visibility was becoming an issue as night fell. "Dodgson, how close is the research base?" Barnes asked. "Only a quarter of a mile from the canyon," the man replied. "Good. We better double time it then. We don't have much longer before Sue gets here, and I'd rather be in a protected structure than out in the open when that happens..." "Just up there," Dodgson said, pointing up at the canyon wall. The area was almost identical to the opposite side of the canyon: a single tram control station, as well as an overgrown trail leading up the slope and back into the jungle...
