Dinosaur Island RPG

Where good and bad RPGs and E-wars go to die.

"Oh what the ****..." David said suddenly, catching a short glimpse of a light among the beams and struts spanning across the room. The light from the flare reflecting back was uncannily similar to that of eye shine from nocturnal creatures. "We're not alone in here" He said as he dropped the flare to the ground and raised his gun. The flare was just about to die, so in just a few moments the darkness would return to give sanctuary to what ever animal resided within the lab...

"Henry and Marilyn, I'll bet. I'd back away if I were you. If the good Doctor's journal's anything to go by, They're going to be all over you in a sec" said Jacob as he started attempting to access the security system on the office, looking for a way to light up the holding pen...

"Henry VIII and Marilyn Manson? Who would have guessed they hung out together. Be on your guard, I have an idea" said David when he stepped back from the doorway several feet. He flicked on the laser sight on his gun when the flare's light faded into nothingness and shined the red beam into the room. He passed it back and forth quickly, trying to entice the two dinosaurs into investigating or outright attacking. Either way, once he got a clear shot he'd open fire, and if they managed to take one step out of the doorway, he was confident Jacob's marksmanship combined with his own would put a quick end to the danger.

The creatures inside the dark room did not budge from their hiding spot, their reflective yellow eyes staring and devoid of any semblance of emotion. They stayed in their dark perch, hidden from obvious view by the mercs outside...

Jenkins' computer, other than his journal word document, was password-protected and heavily encrypted in just about every way imaginable. Clearly, he didn't want anyone accessing this computer except for him...

"Wonderful" said Jacob as he moved to shut the PC down, thinking through the list of options he had to kill off the creatures most likely inside the room...

"Well, ****. If only this place was manufacturing giant killer cats; then they would have been all over this" David commented once it was clear the Troodons weren't reacting to the laser. He started shining it up into the rafters, hoping to irritate or unnerve the dark-loving creatures with the strange light...

The rough sound of scales against metal, whisper-quiet in the lab, finally announced the animals' presence, though they still didn't make a move. Instead, one let out a quiet trilling noise that sounded like a songbird, the harmless-sounding call masking the creatures' potentially lethal nature...

Barnes sighed. "Well, we don't have time wait around for him to show up again, if he does. Jenkins, lead the way to the river, pronto." Jenkins nodded and walked past the group, cheerily replying, "Well, it's a good thing Sue scared us in the right direction, isn't it? It's about a quarter mile this way." "Yeah, real convenient," Barnes muttered, silently signalling the mercs to follow, still listening for the telltale footsteps of Sue, if she decided to pursue them further...

Hiero had known of the mans fate but simply kept quiet when asked. He sighed and followed the group ever onward, in the back of his head he remembered that the Ebbie pen dosage was best taken cool if not at near freezing. He diddn't know if taking it on the sauna like island was going to cause any ill effects but he hoped not.

"Clever...Give a man-eater a bird call. lure in the target then kill them. These ******** put more consideration into this than I thought" said Jacob. He silently cursed himself for not bringing flashbangs. Had he been carrying one, he'd've been able to take these things out in a matter of seconds. the flash would blind them and the bang would scare them into exposing themselves. Backing up against the corner of the door, he eyed David. "Where are they, roughly?" he asked...

"Up on the support beams, running across the ceiling here" David replied, shining his laser up to where he last saw the shadow-cloaked dinosaurs...

The trip wasn't a very long one, especially considering everyone seemed to be in a big hurry to leave the research facility behind. Jenkins carefully pushed past a couple of tall bushes, a trio of compies frightened into the open, squeaking in alarm as they scampered around the group of mercs. Barnes ignored them. He need to watch in case something bigger and potentially more dangerous stepped into the open. The lieutenant, as well as Dodgson, followed Jenkins onto the bank of a wide (nearly 30 feet) and gently flowing river. The water was smooth and calm, but surprisingly murky. He could only make out the shimmering forms of small fish at the water's surface, but couldn't make out the riverbed. "How deep is this river, Doctor?" Jenkins turned to Barnes. "At its shallowest? About 40 feet. This is the main artery for all waterways on the island. Makes sense to be big. It runs the entire length of this place." He pointed over Barnes shoulder, slightly further down the river. "And that's our ride."

A small metal pier extended out into the river near a shallower portion, forming a small docking area. Next to it was one of the strangest boats Barnes had ever seen. The ship, easily 50 feet in length, seemed to defy classification. If he could guess, Barnes would say it was some sort of oceanographic research vessel combined with a cargo ship, and heavily modified beyond its original purpose. Its hull had a few specks of red where there used to be paint, but most of its had peeled away, revealing the dark gray metal beneath. A large command cabin dominated the front of the ship, while the rest of the upper deck was relatively bare. Jenkins smiled. "This, my friends, is the HSV Jurassic. Yes yes, I know, it's not very original, but it works. We primarily used it to transport cargo and perform research from the water. Safe from hungry jaws, so to speak. Dodgson and I are fully qualified to pilot this craft on our own, so the rest of you can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery!" Jenkins moved towards a ladder attached to the ship's hull, within reach from the pier. "All aboard, soldiers! We've got a military to call!"

The Troodons still stayed motionless, not budging from their hiding spots. Occasionally, one would shift slightly, but the movement was so small, so subtle, that the humans would almost certainly miss it, especially in the darkness of the lab...

Hiero raised an eyebrow still not getting the identity or size of the creature, "Crocodiles are big but they could never harm us in that," he said slightly confused and blandly.

Max turns to Hiero once he reaches the top of the ladder. "If I remember correctly, Jenkins said it was a Dienosuchus. Deinosuchus was huge, easily growing to about 50 feet long. And considering what the scientists did to the other dinosaurs on this hellhole, that thing would probably not only be larger, but be stronger and damn near bulletproof."

"Now now," Jenkins chided, waiting at the bottom of the ladder for everyone else to climb aboard. "Deinosuchus is like your average American Alligator in every way but size. Have you ever heard of an alligator attacking a boat of equal size? I don't think so. The Deinosuchus will ignore us, that much I can assure you." "And what about Spinosaurus?" Barnes asked flatly, clearly less amused by the entire situation. He stood in front of Jenkins, burly arms crossed. "I want to know exactly what we could be dealing with, is that understood, Doctor?" Jenkins frowned, paused for a moment, then said, "Spinosaurus territory is nowhere near here. The--she lives in the mangrove swamps farther upriver. I'll be honest; we WILL be passing by her home, but we will not be entering it. The outpost just happens to be near there. Fortunately, she does not venture too far from the water, so we should be home free when we get there." Barnes stared hard at Jenkins for a few seconds. The scientist had a good poker face, that much was true. After a rather uncomfortable silence, Barnes relented. He climbed the ladder, growling over his shoulder, "You had better be right, doc. I really, really do..."

"But if she lives near the water, and we're on a boat.... doesn't that mean we'll probably see her?" Max says, now a bit nervous...

"Perhaps she'll ignore us. I mean, Spinosaurus are primarily fish-eaters..." Persephone responded as she climbed up the ladder, though now she was gettig worried, though no trace of tat was present, not in her voice, or on her face. Truth be told, the gears in her brain were still grinding a rapid pace, and not just about Jenkin's honesty. A Spinosaurus? Yes, she knew from reading about them in her books that Spinosaurs tended to be fish-eaters, and not top-notch fighters. However, given the fact that these animals were here to be used as weapons, and the fact that a few species were made to be more like their Jurassic Park counterparts, she could only hope that the Spinosaurus that lived on this islnd hadn't been turned into Spino-zilla...

"Perhaps," Jenkins said to Max. "But only at a distance. She rarely leaves her territory, and she certainly won't chase our boat for no good reason." Turning to Persephone, he added, "Yes and no. Spinosaurus is actually more of an opportunistic hunter, like a grizzly bear. She'll eat fish, sure, but she isn't above hunting other dinosaurs if she must. Of course, between taking some nice fish and a big metal boat, I'm sure she'll choose the fish every time..."
