"Well get us a god damned green light!" responded Jacob furiously. "It's not that simple, Jacob. I have a lot of power, yes. But not that much. So far the main reason I've had so much control over OWL is because they needed me to maintain this operation's safety from outside influences. Now that it's about to be scrapped, I'll have to find other ways to maintain my control over it" responded Atlas calmly despite his old friend's anger. "Don't you DARE pull that ******** with me, Atlas. You can pull it with those idiots you twist and toy with back home, but don't you even THINK about pulling the 'I-can't-do-it' card on me. I know you too well to fall for that ********" responded Jacob, seething, his anger threatening to spill out of his private discussion and into the real world, the Cyborg's hands already balled into fists so tight that were a chunk of solid steel in his hand at that moment it'd be crushed like a dry leaf. "Jacob, will you calm the **** down and LISTEN to me for a second?" replied Atlas, losing his composure for a brief moment. Jacob was burning with the urge to respond, but held his tongue, knowing his situation was dire at the moment.

Seeing the silence as a sign to continue, Atlas sighed. "Listen. It's going to take time for me to retake control of the situation on this end. I'll get you out of there. Even disregarding the fact you're my best agent, we have a long history. You should know by now that I never turn my back on someone I value. Just keep calm, hang in there and be patient. Give it a few weeks, months perhaps. Will depend on how complicated replicating Portal conditions will be, though from what I've learned of it it shouldn't be too difficult with what I have access to. I'll find a solution to it. Afterall; you're talking to the man who cured mortality" said the blonde haired scientist from his lab in Los Diamantes. Jacob paused for a few moments, processing what he had heard. "...Alright. Just...try and keep in touch, if at all possible. I'd rather not be left to stew in my own paranoia" responded Jacob, notably more calm. "I'll see what I can do. But I doubt I'll be able to communicate until I have successfully reopened a portal. In the mean time, you and Kane keep gathering information about the rift world. As of now, the mission is research and reconnaissance. The more data you have when I get the portal open again, the more use it'll be to help us understand how that world works" responded Atlas. "Right. So, back to basics, then" responded Jacob simply. "Contact me as soon as possible. I'll be waiting on your word" he added, Atlas acknowledging the request with a nod, the holographic image of him visible on his digital display fading as contact was cut. And so, the real mission begins...

"This might be more than you were initially prepared to handle, but you said before your specialty is adapting to your missions," Kane said after gathering his thoughts and organizing them properly."The portal is indeed showing signs of increased fluctuations and potential to grow. Our mission now is to find its tether to the rift and...eliminate it. In theory. It should close the portal and thus prevent any more of the planet from being absorbed into the rift. Downside is: we'll be stuck in here until OWL can get a lock on Felicity's Relativity Coil and try to make a portal on Earth...and a national landmark will have been lost forever with only a crater to show for it"

He paused.

"Sounds simple enough doesn't it?" he asked, trying to keep in good spirits.

"Except that OWL has no intention of bringing us back" said Jacob calmly as he looked at Kane. "We stick to the plan then. Find the tether, do whatever is necessary to destroy it, and thus in effect, destroy the portal. The poor sods on team two are probably completely clueless" he added as he stood, eyeing his hands for signs of pressure damage caused by his earlier frustration, pleased to find there were none. At least he take comfort in the fact that Atlas had given him ridiculously hardy equipment. If he couldn't survive this mission to its end, nothing could...

"They were not given any of the contingency info, though they might have been suspicious about signing their lives away if they read the fine print. But hardly anyone does so..." Kane replied, indirectly agreeing with Jacob. "...Since we have to go searching for tethers anyway, wanna go fly over to those ruins our acquaintance pointed us towards?"

"We'll have time for that afterwards. Right now the tethers should be our priority. The longer we delay, the more dangerous the situation becomes for Earth" responded Jacob. Not even two hundred years of Mercenary work could erase his hard-wired SAS training. The objective always took priority, regardless of circumstances...

"Right then," Kane said with a nod. He made a note to mark this location for future reference. "curiosity will have to wait"

The alerts and readouts on the screen disappeared except for one: the sensory array. Should the signs of portal activity increase, the two would know they are nearing one of the tether points...

With the search underway, Jacob decided it was time to ensure his equipment was prepared for the job. Thorough though his previous checks were, there was never any harm in repeating the procedure. And barring that, he needed something to occupy him while he waited. As a man used to activity when on a mission, having nothing to do but sit and wait for developments was something he had never been too comfortable with...

Damian followed quickly after the duo, the two quickly speeding past him. The monster's grim red gaze could be seen moving inthe shadows. Damian tried to shien his light at the monster to drive it back, but, unfortuantely, it managed to avoid his line of sight, making sure to avoid the light-wieldign being. Instead, Crom pressed on beside the other two, for they were much safer prey to pursue...

At last, Yukari and Rebin were out in the open, and the APC was right up ahead... and uncomftorably close to them was the figure of Crom. Aiming her plasma gun at the figure as she ran, Yukari fired it, a flash of light spreading from the weapon as the projectile zoomed toward Crom. As she did this, Rebin managed to reach the vehicle first and clambored inside...

Crom avoided the projectile with surprising ease, but he let out a paiend hiss from the bright flash of light unleashed from the barrel of the plasma gun. Crom was suddenly blasted in the side by Damian's grenade launcher, causing the creature's body to violently disperse. The beast soon reformed, but withdrew as soon as Damian shone his light on it. The shadowy creature fell back, tempted to simply charge into the APC and massacre those inside, but realizing the risks it would be taking.... he had lost the element of surprise....

As the creature seemingly vanished, Damian quickly ran inside, before he closed up the back of the APC.

"WAY too close."

As Yukari got in as well and shut the door, she collapsed, feeling as if she had gained a few gray hairs from that encounter. "You know what? why don't we forget about the stupid probes and leave with our lives now?" She asked as she tried to regain herself. "There was nothing that indicated the Grim Reaper and killer robots in this dimension from what the probe sent back..."

Rebin sighed. " I for one agree with that. Let's leave, and then come back with an entire army if everything in this world is that hostile and dangerous..."

"I think...it would probably be best we keep the news of the closing of the portal from the other team until after we're done. Upset as they'll probably be, we can't risk them interfering with the mission" said Jacob as he worked on his assault rifle. He had been somewhat dissatisfied with its firing behaviour earlier, the weapon having been persistently refusing to fire semi-automatically, costing him a potential advantage in the fight with the Tigrex; Had it fired semi-automatically when he wanted it to, he could have blinded the beast completely, giving him a massive advantage in the fight...

"I'd suggest we wait until the morning," Damian said. "I certainly don't want this thnig to crash in the middle of the night. Who KNOWS what else is lurking around out this darkness.... we already met one less-than-friendly night dwelling resident..."

"You're telling me things that I've been briefed on well in advance of this contingency. I know about the paper trail and deception OWL had to resort to in order to get their way when everyone and everything was against them in this operation and I know about what they are prepared to do should the mission uncover something like this," Kane replied, his eyes peering out of his view window and down at the rolling landscape below. On the Nav-reader, yellow rings emanated from a central point akin to sonar, hunting for signs of strong temporal activity. "They weren't willing, mind you. Our project leaders weren't going ahead with the directive without thinking about the lives at stake. It's just that in the end, if it comes down to us and the world at large...then the choice is pretty clear..."

"I guess you are right. First we should try to get this APC into a safer place than out in the open." Yukari stated, pushing her glasses up onto the ridge of her nose as she sat up.

"yeah... but where are we gonna go? I don't think going to another cave will be a good idea... and we have no idea what lurks out here, unless you feel like going back to the pig's cave." Rebin pointed out with a chuckle, which brought him a quick glance from Yukari. As much as she hated to admit it, he was right. They had no idea where to go to park this thing safely. They needed a plan, and bad.

Damian seemed to be staying relatively calm at the moment. the APC was completely closed up, and it seemed like that shadowy nightmare had left them completely alone for now. So Damian pondered to himself about their current predicament. Their current location was far too open, and was easily attacked from all sides... who KNEW how long it would be before that monster decided to come back. The armored man soon spoke up, taking his sledgehammer down from his back and settign across his lap.

"Well, we sure as hell can't stay here," Damian said aloud, before he turned to Rebin. "No more caves. That's that. Last time we entered a cave, we nearly got turned into mush. I'd say our best bet is to find a place with heavy cover... perhaps a canyon, or maybe make ourselves at home on top of a rock outcropping. We could also go into the forest as well, and use the trees as cover..."

Damian shook his head. It was going to be a LOOOONG night. The man got up to his feet, and soon headed towards the cockpit of the APC.

"Wherever we go, we'd best start now before something coems to get us."

Damian soon started up the APC, the massive futuristic machien whirring to life, as it soon began to hover over the marshy lands and began to mvoe forwar.d Damian soon took control of the vehicle, speeding off towards somewhere less open....

"Oh, don't worry. Our problem will sort itself out in due time" said Jacob simply as he worked on his weapon's firing mechanism, having narrowed down the source of the problem...

"I'm sure you'd know, Mr. Spencer..." Kane replied without looking at his escort, voicing what he suspected to be at work around him. It was no coincidence that the partner of David Roman would end up being inserted into the mission specs at the last minute to work with his son. The question of why and what this entailed for the rest of the mission was heavy on the scientist's mind.

"Jacob" the Mercenary corrected, not turning his gaze from his work. "Mr. Spencer is a name for business associates. I don't expect my best friend's only son to call me by that name" he added, putting down a hex-head screw driver and switching to a Phillips-tip instead. "OWL and its associates would see the entire project and all involved in it abandoned regardless of whatever hope there may be in rescuing those involved. Don't believe the ******** about them doing it with a heavy heart. In the end, most of them are corporate snakes pushing their agenda. Closing the portal is as much about saving the world as it is about covering their asses if they fail. When everything goes to hell, they don't want whatever's left to go 'Those sons-of-bitches in OWL are the ones to blame'" he said, reassembling the firing mechanism as he spoke...
