"Makes sense. You don't emerge on the world scene with something as huge as inter-dimensional travel and get greeted with welcoming arms...OWL was just a small fish in a very large ocean...except it had some respectably large company" Kane replied, sparing a glance at Jacob. "I don't suppose you're willing to share anything about that, are you?" he asked somewhat wryly. Even if Jacob refused, he'd at least know there were some underhanded dealings going on during the mission's inception...

"That depends on what you want to know" said Jacob as he worked, not lifting his gaze from the mechanism in front of him, not wanting to lose track of what he was doing...

"Who put you here, really?" Kane inquired.

Below, the sands of the desert were giving way to uneven land, gradually rising and dipping drastically in some parts. Like the desert, there were mesas here but they were like giant struts of rock towering high into the sky by unnatural means, vegetation winding its way down and collecting on relatively small outcroppings, some covering the mouths of caves. Far above were three celestial bodies, moons of a yellow, silver and red color, bathing the rift world in an almost ethereal glow. How many other moons did this world have? Which ones were visible in the day?

Which ones belonged to which world when they all met their doom?

"Well, I suppose its only fair, seeing as you and I will be working for him once our current job to take out the portal is overwith. The man I work for usually works below the radar. Only people that know him are the ones that need to. He goes by the name Atlas Stone, and has been my employer and friend for most of the time since the Resurrection Incident. And a short while before that, as it happens" explained Jacob as he worked. "He's the one keeping OWL afloat and out of the reach of the corporate big-wigs, along with.....numerous government entities who want their fingers in the Rift Research results and all proceedings that come from it" he explained, having paused mid sentence as he worked on a particularly delicate part of the firing mechanism, before reassembling it. "Having that high a position gives him a unique vantage point and considerable power with OWL's upper management. Odds are half of the stuff your boss was dealing with when I arrived were correspondents from Atlas"...

"That explains a lot...from what you told me, I don't think the esteemed Mr. Calhoun has been my boss for a while now..." Kane replied, watching as shapes moved through the dark blue sky one large wings, gliding for the most part before their silhouettes morphed with a wing flap, passing in between the spires sprouting up from the ground below, what appeared to be grassy plains.

"Odds are, he never was. Suppose you could think of him as a puppet, dangling from some really long strings" said Jacob with a chuckle as he finished assembling the firing mechanism, reinstalling it in the weapon and proceeding to finish up. "I find it funny that I end up being the means through which you are recruited to his direct employment...I did the same with your old man" he commented after a few moments...

"Does Atlas think talent is hereditary? I'm not sure what my father did in his line of work and something tells me I wouldn't fare too well trying my own hands at it if you catch my drift" said the young man when an alert appeared on screen. The shapes outside were all Tigrex...apparently the spires were some kind of nesting ground for the giants...

"Trust me, adrenaline has a tendency to turn kittens into tigers. I'm sure you'll manage. Besides, you have skills in fields that he can make use of here. Once the portal's gone, Atlas wants us to continue gathering data on the Rift. Anything and everything we can learn about it" said Jacob as he tightened the final screws on the assault rifle on the table in front of him...

"Well we might as well do so since we're gonna be here a while" Kane said. He angled Felicity upwards and throttled up slightly, the orange and black vessel gaining altitude so that it would be flying above the range of the Tigrex. He did not want the ship to be mistaken for a prey item or a rival creature. Why would an apex predator used to being at the top of its world mind something above it?

With the APC on the move, Yukari tried to stay awake. She was tired, exhausted, and just wanted to get out of this nightmare... or if that wasn't possible, then continue their mission in a far less agressive corner of this world.

"So... anyone mind some jokes while we're looking for a safe place to sleep?" Rebin asked as he tried his best to get comfy in the APC. He reached into his backpack and pulled out the book of jokes he had with him, which caused Yukari to groan half-heartedly.

"Sure.. why not? But as I said before, the minute they go from funny to annoying, that book's getting lodged down your throat." She joked, somewhat relieved with the change of mood Rebin was trying to bring around. Nothing better to do in an unknown world than to tell jokes in the safety of an armored vehicle. "How about you, Damian?"

Damian's eyes glanced around in the dark, the bear of a man activating the high beams on the APC. The shrubbery was beginning the get thciker now, so there was hope for them to find a good place nearby. The scanner seemed to have picked up no lifeforms, and also picked up no heavy amoutns of abnormalities... whatever those were. The man soon responded to his allies, his focus not moving from the land that lay ahead.

"Sure. Wouldn't mind a good joke to calm my nerves. We probably need some more humor, anyways...."

With that approval, the jokester flipped through his book of jokes, puns, and riddles until he found one that he liked. "Okay, How do pirates conserve energy?" He asked. Yukari began to ponder what answer it was, but whatever it was, she knew it was going to be dumb, and stupid. Rebin RARELY had good jokes, and almost all of them left the audience (usually her) wanting to get back the minute or so of their life they had wasted.

Damian glanced back at Rebin, almost as if suggesting to stupidity of the joke, but the burly man played alogn with it as he reinitiated the scanners on the APC.

"I don't know," Damian said. "How do they?"

Rebin smiled smugly as he sat back. "They carrrrrpool!" He replied, which earned him a groan from Yukari.

"That was just... I don't even-" The scientist tried to respond, but words were failing her right now in terms of both the stupidity and the dumbness of it...

"Amazing," Damian chortled out, though he wasn't laughnig at the joke itself, per se.... he was laughing at Yukari's reaction to the joke. Soon, Damian found a suitable place for them to settle down for the night. The thick trees surroudned the entire area, and the land was raised higher than the surrounding area, giving them an excellent defensive position. Whiel they could be mabushed, Damian left the scanenrs on the APC to prevent such an event form occuring. The massibe bear of a man soon turned towards the two sitting down in the center of the APC.

"You two should make yourselves comfortable. I guarantee that it will be a long night for us...."

A blip appeared on the APC's scanners as a faint beeping tone began to ring, announcing the presence of something in the distance; apparently a base of some kind, though a visual feed would reveal it to be a military stronghold that looked well fortified. Tall, thick walls surrounded the perimeter of the building, topped with barbed wire fences and periodically separated by spotlight-equipped defence towers. The building within wasn't too large, made up of two floors and few windows, most only a foot tall and three times that in width, barred horizontally to shield them from damage. The roof was equipped with a helipad, though the aircraft that was supposed to be there was absent. At least, absent from the pad itself. Instead, it was embedded in a wall beside the helipad, flames roaring across its form as fuel leaked from a fuel tank hidden within the craft, pooling beneath it, a time bomb waiting to go off. The base seemed silent apart from the occasional stray gunshot or explosion, and the insides seemed thoroughly deserted at a glance...

Wanting to get her mind off Rebin's horrible jokes, Yukari was quick to notice the blimp on the screen. "I think we got something." She noted, heading over to activate the live feed. As she did, she turned to see the building that was now being projected out. "Hey, if there's a building here..."

"Then there must be other, native people living in this place!" Rebin gasped, realizing the implications of this. People here meant a possible safe place to be at, others to get along with and cooperate with, and possibly where the probes were. "Think you can take u sover there, Damian?" Rebin asked, Yukari oddly silent now, studying what she saw, as if seeing something that wasn't right...

Damian soon walked over to map-liek device, sutdying the imagery caught by the scanners. What he saw was something that seemed out of a horror movie. What the hell had happened over there?

"I don't think it would be wise to check it out yet..." Damian said. "It is dark out, and we've already had enough adventure for one day, I think. I certainly don't want to barge head-first into a possibly abandoned outpost full of people that may or may not be friendlies. And besides, it looks like they were attacked by some sort of monster. I'd rather not go and ivnestigate it.... god KNOWS what did that damage."

Damian reloaded hsi grenade launcher, as he headed off to find his stasis tank to sleep in...

"Damian's right." Yukari agreed with him as she looked away from the hologram. "See that helicoptor? Whatever threw that into the wall, had to be immensely powerful. Whatever it was, I don't feel like meeting up with it. Also, it's already dark, so better to wait till morning, then go and check it out."

"If you say so." Rebin responded as he went toward his stasis tank. As he opened up the lid of the sleeping chamber, he turned and saw that Yukari was still standing there, her eyes roving from the image to where the food rations were. "Um, aren't you going to get into your tank as well?" Rebin asked, to which Yukari turned her attention back to him.

"I'll be getting into mine soon. I just have to jot down some notesabout what happened today, get a little something to eat, and then I'll be going to sleep as well." The scientist told Rebin, who took it at face value, and closed off the stasis tank...

Damian soon sat down next to his satis tank, taking off his heavy helmet at settign it down next to him. The big burly man wiped the sweat off from his brow. It had been a long day. It didn't help that these two scientists had brought with them little to no armament. It disappointed the man at how badly the dayh ad gone. He kenw that he had been called on by his commander ot join this expedition to serve as a guardian of sorts, but he didn't expect things to be this hectic and for them to be so unprepared. But then, a thought struck Damian- this was a military class vehicle, specially made for them.... he'd think that there had to be soem kind of armaments lying aroudn here. The man soon got up frotm his seat, before he headed out of the stasis chamber and towards the Storage room. There had to be equipment of some kind in there that they had passed up....
