"Oh bloody hell Kane, this isn't the time to stare. Get us out of here!" said Jacob firmly as he took a seat and buckled up. The next few minutes would undeniably be rough...

Kane shook his head. "Er, right!" he responded to the cyborg, then commanded the ship: "Felicity, evasive maneuvers! Get us to a one kilometer radius from anomalous energy readings, stat!"

With that, the orange and black ship turned away from Zulu'khan with the airlock door being pulled shut. The last thing Kane saw of the monolith was the emergence of the rest of what he assumed to be the "monster" the machine man spoke of. If Zulu'khan kept it away...did that mean the thing was actually what Zulu'khan was inside? A gigantic robot integrated into the structure of a pyramid of stone and metal? It was all so strange...

Disregarding the mounting unknowns, Kane was quick to dock his suit and exit it, rushing to Felicity's cockpit and strapping into his seat. The engines were already pointed aft, burning away at full throttle, the craft leaving the portal storm behind it with dual contrails stretching across the energized skies. The color was a bright neon green with black streaks of lightning rippling across the clouds.

The tower came to a grinding stop, a low groan echoing for miles like some kind of bestial sound from the "planet" itself. It then started to descend into the tunnel in a cloud of debris as the mechanical monstrosity continued to rip itself from its confines; first was the mock spinal column, ridges of metal arranged in such a way, then another arm...

Jacob sighed irritably as he saw the sensors' generation of the threat. "I miss the days when C4 could solve any problem" he grumbled unamusedly...the Felicity wasn't equipped for airborne combat, and his guns were generally not sufficient to take down so large a threat...

"I think what's going to happen here will be a lot more than your C4 could manage, Jacob. I think Zulu'khan -if that IS him crawling out of his shell- knows it too. He's trying to get out while he still can." Kane replied. "But on the bright side...one tether down, right?"

The rest of the behemoth machine emerged from the monolith, a cloud of dust rising into the sky, red glowing points dotting the plume; from which the machine lumbered forth. Its body was impossibly skinny for something of its size, its general build similar to that of a preying mantis. Its arms extended well past its torso, its legs were long and ended in six claws. Its head was bulbous with several mechanical tendrils dangling from its visage, like some kind of robotic cephalopod. It had no visible eyes to speak of...

"Let's hope he's as slow as he is big. I really don't want to go down there and start picking him apart if I can help it" said Jacob as he looked at the creature's head, his tone shifting somewhat. "Never thought I'd run into a mechanical Cthulu while I was here, that's for sure. Thought I was done when I got rid of the original" he commented. Already, he was plotting ways through which he could destroy the goliath if ever the need arose. He was certain it would happen eventually, if not now...

"I'll consider this our formal welcoming to the Rift, then. Our stay will be...pleasant. Very pleasant." said the scientist, who then chuckled weakly thereafter.

"Welcome to hell."

In the few minutes the two had been flying, they had covered an incredible amount of ground. The spires jutting up from the landscape were falling away into the distance, the monumental machine being but a shadow behind the Felicity. It happened so abruptly in spite of the numerous warning signs. The sky became blindingly bright as if a star had exploded. Sound seemed to go mute in the general area of the event -even on board the craft.

Seconds later, it all went away; the blinding light disappeared and noise came rushing back in a barrage upon the ears. The Felicity was rocked with a pressure wave stronger than the gusts of wind surrounding the monolith, Kane fighting to keep the craft from nosediving into the ground.

A dome of energy rushed out in all directions, rising high into the sky, warping and distorting everything at the edge of the explosion like that of an Event Horizon...

"****...." Damian cursed udner his breath. This monstrosity is pretty tough. Its original form was already fairly tough, shrugging off a railgun round... but this thing, it wasn't even FAZED by round! Damian soon locked onto the silmy tyrannosaur's head, the railgun charging up audibly.

"Taste this, you son of a *****," Damian growled, before he fired the railgun right at the mutant tyrannosaur's face. The APC kept speeding along, maintaining a speed of roughly 50 miles per hour. The end of the canyon was rapidly approaching, and soon, they'd be sent out into the open desert... which would give them somewhat of an advantage. Hopefully, Damian thought, the mutant would lose steam soon, or get crippled from this shot... or else they'd be in for a lnog day.

The Tyrannosaur bellowed as the cannon charged, the shot blowing its head clean off, the body stumbling forward, seeming as though it would collapse...

....Until it caught itself with a foot, a bubbling black liquid pooling in the hole where it's head once was. In seconds, another, grotesque head formed where the old one once was. This was no Rex head however. Instead, it was a grotesque mass of black slime and shards of bone; its rib bones, specifically. The beast was demolishing its own interior to regenerate. In that moment, the head was suddenly thrown forward as a massive black tendril, sticking to the turret of the vehicle and anchoring it in place, the slime pouring into the bore of the railgun and corroding it, making it dangerous to fire a shot. Leaving a chunk of the slime in place, the tendril retracted, the head reforming as the beast charged after the vehicle, it's chest seeming to cave in and collapse as it did so, two large tendrils morphing into forelimbs as the beast turned quadrupedal, bolting after the APC with speed a Rex could never dream of attaining...

"Scheisse!" cursed Dietrich as he felt the entire APC quake with the tendril's blow, alarms going off inside the vehicle as warnings on the damage done came up on the primary display...

Rebin kept up the fire with the turret he was on. "Gosh dangit, when is this place going to stop churning out these abominations?" He shouted, keeping the turret aimed on the mutant. Yukari, finding herself unable to aim at it still, simply got off the turret, grabbed her anti-tank rifle, opened up the side door, and very carefully took aim back at the abomination chasing them and aimed and fired at it. This thing was getting ridiculous. An undead mutant monster chasing after them... not the weirdest thing they've come across here in the riftworld, but still an annoyance she didn't want to deal with. All she'd have to do was avoid falling out of the APC, and diving back when the thing tried to attack, and she'd be okay....

The tether had been destabilized. In turn the energies sustaining a bridge between dimensions lashed out at reality itself.

A crater. That was all that was left to show where Zulu'khan once stood as an imposing landmark. A king of this stretch of open space, gone forever. The spires that surrounded the monolith had been leveled; obliterated utterly. There was simply nothing left but that crater and dead land, surrounded by life. It was as if that region of the Rift had simply evaporated.

Zulu'khan was nowhere to be found.

Neither was Felicity. At least, not there.

For Kane and Jacob had been thrown by the dilation of space and time. Where they once flew out into open landscape, the two explorers inexplicably found themselves soaring over a hilly countryside that had tracks sprawling across the ground. In the distance...was a city. An actual city of buildings, decrepit as they clearly were even at a distance. Skyscrapers with huge gashes in the sides, some partially collapsed leaving jagged knives of concrete, glass and rebar to stab at the sky.

A new location. Another hub of danger.

"Well...At least we shouldn't be hearing from THAT thing any time soon" commented Jacob as they regained a normal flight path. He took note of the city laying on the horizon, sighing. "Finally. Something at least somewhat normal. With a bit of luck the next hub won't be quite so....annoying to deal with"...

The round exploded against the beast's face, a screeching bellow coming from it as it's face was engulfed in the blast, before it began to weave back and forth mid-charge, making it harder to hit, it's initially skull-like head structure morphing into a lamprey-like maw, circular and lined with spikes as it spread out widely with a gurgling snarl. As it did so, hundreds of spike-like fangs extended from the black slimy walls of its maw, before being launched at the vehicle at bullet-like velocities, the spikes clattering against the vehicle's hull, several embedding themselves a couple of centimetres into the armoured surface of the vehicle, some clattering against the doorway of the APC and threatening to tear Yukari to shreds, saved at the last second as Dietrich pulled her into the vehicle and out of reach of the beasts darts, which embedded themselves in the door frame right where she had been. "DAMIEN! DRIVE US BY ZAT ROCKY OUTCROP! I HAVE AN IDEA!" he yelled over the noise, the jagged rocky ridge visible up ahead. It was large, but its base looked vulnerable. He lifted his assault rifle, bracing to fire the moment his opportunity came up...

"It wouldn't matter if we tried to save them...in the end they would have been caught in the blast regardless and...who knows what happened to Z.K..." Kane muttered, resting his forehead in his palm momentarily as the implications of this whole ordeal sank in. Diverting his thoughts from the people of the tether, he turned to Jacob and asked: "So what do you make of this place? It's a city...but it looks like something from back home, doesn't it?"

"They were an obstruction to the mission. Put them behind you" said Jacob when Kane reflected on the civilians lost within Zulu'Khan. As the man brought up the topic of the city, he grunted, taking a close look at the skyline. "For some reason I'm tempted to say it's Tokyo...But not. An alternate timeline, maybe?" he commented...

"Alternate Earths? But...that means...holy -just how large IS this 'planet'!?" Kane responded, jolting up in his seat. If there were countless alien worlds already claimed by the Rift and the worlds of other dimensions and realities...then the Rift was ever expansive. A universe in of itself without the vast gulf of space separating worlds.

With this realization, Kane clutched his head again. "We've entered infinity, haven't we?"

"Possibly. A place that expands as it consumes others, maybe?" suggested Jacob as he puzzled over the possibilities. It also brought up another question; How did they know that that the tethers they were destroying were truly the ones for THEIR portal? What if their supposed targets were the portals of other worlds? It was a worrying realisation. "Kane...Are Felicity's scanners sensitive enough to detect subtle differences in the types of Rift Energy? Different frequencies, or whatever passes for them in this upside down place?" he asked, his tone masking his concern well...

"Yes. They have to be. Rift energy is exactly what it sounds like -not like those Stabilizers. It is the residual radiation that is everywhere here. It's also the thing binding this dimension together; what makes this place habitable is also what creates monsters, Jacob." Kane answered, the things he had learned thus far of the alien plane coming together.

They painted a morbid picture.

" Any good idea to kill this thing with ease would be much appreciated. I don't thinkwhat we have is doing much to it!" Rebin shouted as the turret he was manning kept up the firepower on the mutant. Seriously, just what did it take to kill this thing?

"Thanks." Yukari grumbled as she realized just how close she had been to death. She needed to be more careful... that had been a carless and risky action on her part, and she had almost been killed by it. She put her hand up on her head. It felt... oddly warm. Ignoring that, she made her way back to the door, and this time, aimed her sniper rifle around the opening toward the charging monster, and fired once, quickly falling back into the safety of the APC once she had fired, not wanting to risk exposing herself for too long...

Damian glanced up, and also noted the rocky outcrop. Seeing what Dietrich was planning, the burly man repleid in the affirmative.

"Affirmative," the bear-man said hastily. "Brace yourselves, we're gonna get a biiiit quicker!"

Damian pulled on one of the levers next to the steering wheel. Suddenly, jets of blue-tinted flames began to blast out from the behind the APC, the blue fire threatening the scorch the approaching rex if it came any closer. The APC's already impressive speed soon rocketed to almost 120 miles per hour, the massive wall of steel and metal rocketing through the valley and straight for the rock outcropping. It would be but a few seconds, and they'd be in position to crush the monster.....

The Rex-Hound charged after the vehicle, shockingly managing to keep up with it despite its boost in speed, though as they passed the rocky outcropping, Dietrich took Yukari's place in the doorway of the APC, taking aim behind them at the outcropping as the Rex closed in. "Auf wiedersehen, du arschgesicht!" called the Commander with a smirk, as he pumped the slider on the underside of his rifle, a reddish, 3 inch long, 1 inch thick projectile soaring from the thick tubular barrel over the weapon, streaking forward with a glowing red trail as it collided with the rocky outcrop, a brilliant reddish orange blast engulfing it as what looked like a miniature singularity formed on the impact point for a moment, consuming what was in the immediate reach of the blast, a second whitish explosion blowing the rocky ridge apart entirely as massive chunks of rock smashed into the charging Rex-Hound, a furious screech escaping its disgusting maw as it tried in vain to evade the debris, a chunk of rock as big as the beast itself crushing it instantly, Dietrich pulling into the vehicle as he laughed. "Let's see it try and get up vith a few tons of rock on its back!" he said as he regained his composure...

"You mean to tell me we're practically destabilising the entire realm by blowing up the tethers?" asked Jacob with a raised brow as he eyed the kid. He had to admit, everything about this place floated just a bit outside his comfort zone. In a place where everything from the wildlife to the plane of existence itself was trying to kill him, he disliked not having any concrete fact he could depend on.Then again, wasn't that, in itself a concrete fact? Everything wanted him dead. That just meant he'd have to kill everything. Simple enough...

"To some extent, yes. Just being in the blast wave of that last one...teleported us..." Kane replied. "I...am not sure," he continued, feeling very uncomfortable starting off with those words. "I doubt destroying the tethers would create some adverse effect on the rest of this plane...but there isn't much I can be sure of in this realm."

He stared straight out of the ship's main screen, frowning. This undertaking seemed to be a lot greater than anyone could have imagined it to be. There was a lot he needed to let sink in; from Zulu'khan to the nature of the Rift itself. He saw a relatively intact building coming into his sights from the foreground of ruins, though its stained walls and shattered windows showed that it had not escaped whatever travesty befell this city. On its roof was a landing pad...though it was octagonal rather than circular. It also did not have an H...it probably was not a helipad.

Fittingly enough, for Felicity wasn't a helicopter.
