"Take us down" said Jacob as he eyed the building, though odds were Kane was already thinking it himself, judging by their position. "Lets hope this place doesn't fold like a house of cards while we're here. I'd rather not have to dig our plane out of a few million tons of rubble" he commented, just as the corner of one reasonably distant spire cracked and plummeted in a rain of debris, winged creatres scattering from its rooftop as an explosion of dust was kicked up at the foot of the skyscraper...

"When it comes to Felicity, hope and luck just don't cut it." said the scientist seconds before a window appeared on the ship's screen, a digital scan of the building displayed on it. It was a blue and black matrix with lines of text streaming across the top and side.

"Structural integrity is solid enough. Picking up on some Rift radiation, a bit higher than normal. No signs of a tether nearby, though. I have a feeling it might be even stronger near ground level...if what we've seen so far is anything to go on." Kane said, easing Felicity onto the landing pad, landing gear extended. It touched down softly, its growling engines gradually powering down, the hot glow at their rims rapidly disappearing.

"Sensors aren't picking up on any baddies nearby. Gonna have the ship hunker down and go have a look around the area. I assume you want a proper stroll yourself?" Kane joked as he started to unbuckle himself.

Damian let out a low sigh of relief, as he let the thrusters on the APC die down. The flames soon disappeared, and the massive, armor plated machine soon returned to its normal state. The blips of life energy were essentially non-existant from the mutant by now, and, from Damian could observe, there was little around. The armored man soon complimented Dietrich.

"Good thinking there, soldier," Damian said. "Probably saved us a good amount of trouble... and our lives."

"Dietrich" corrected the Commander. "I believe ve have surpassed the point of referring to eachother as soldiers, no?" he concluded. "You don't need to thank me. But if you could spare it, I would appreciate if you could take me to these coordinates" he explained, just as the coordinates of a location a few miles from them appeared on the main display of the APC's control panel...

"Of course. Can't have you waltzing around on your own down there, can I?" responded Jacob with a smirk as he unbuckled himself, checking his armour for damages from the previous fight as he made his way back to his quarters to re-arm. He wasn't short on munitions...but he could carry more. If there was one thing years of work in the field of battle had taught him, it was that if you have less than you can carry, you WILL need it eventually. And he was hardly a man who left things to chance...

"Definitely. Who knows what kind of trouble I'd get myself into while off on my own!" Kane said to Jacob as he left, trying to lighten his mood. Too much was on the line to get depressed about what he could or couldn't do. Maybe some day when all was said and done, he could reflect on his deeds and pass judgement then. For now, he had to look far beyond himself as a person. His world was at stake!

And knowledge was invaluable. The more he learned about this realm, the more prepared he could be. He had already made his prototype...but he was certain there was more to be done with the technology. Improvements and breakthroughs, all so very near and yet so far from his reach...

Before getting up from the cockpit, he deployed another quartet of disk-drones to survey the area, collecting images to be transferred to home base and basic Rift information. The heightened levels of energy in the city provided an excellent scientific opportunity...one that came with its hazards...

It wasn't long until Jacob was back, equipped with supplies and munitions as needed, with extras where he could afford. Heading towards the airlock, he rolled his neck, putting on his shades as he flipped an old, worn looking combat knife in hand, the edge, surprisingly, maintaining a dangerously sharp looking edge, reflecting a rich silver sheen. It was one of three knives he had on his person at all times, in addition to the monoblades. Useful as they were, energy blades couldn't match the utility of the good old fashioned combat knife. This particular blade had been repaired and reforged only once in its long history, and seemed, for all intents and purposes, prepared to keep serving for a long while yet...

The internal airlock door slid shut behind Jacob around the same time the suit's docking compartment opened, Kane stepping out of it and into the chamber. It closed shortly after, its locks sounding off with clicks and ratcheting. With a hum, the exterior doors popped outwards and slid apart, first letting in a crack of of pre-dusk light then giving way to the rest of the ruined skyline stretching out around the landing pad.

Kane stepped out onto the landing pad, looking around at the ruined cityscape, seeing the red sun already dipping down beyond the horizon while its companion star was a bit higher in the sky, partially obscured by the frayed towers. The Rift world's moon was also visible...or rather, the gigantic multitude of them. They loomed in the night sky, large and small, some in orbits closer than Earth's own moon. Rings of space rock stretched out between them like those of Saturn, the remnants of wrangled satellites that failed to find their place in this realm's heavens. Violent collisions were frequent, smashing the bodies into their barest components.

The product of these celestial wars did not always remain suspended above the Rift world. It would not be rare to see flaming streaks shooting across the skies...

"Houston, we have another goddamn problem" said Jacob jokingly as he stepped out, looking at the space debris streaking between the various moons above. walking down a set of steps beside the landing pad, Jacob walked towards the edge of the roof top, still flipping his blade in hand as he looked down over the edge. Far below, he picked up specks of movement and humanoid beings. At this distance, even he had trouble identifying anything else. "Hm. This place may not be as dead as we thought" he commented...

Kane chuckled. "Well if the buildings can survive the apocalypse..." he trailed off, concluding mentally: "then life will too."

He carefully approached the edge of the building as well, taking great care in maneuvering. The last thing he wanted was the concrete crumbling away beneath his feet. He tried his suit's magnifiers, a rectangular window appearing before Kane's eyes. They fared little better than Jacob's own, however. He only saw basic shapes scurrying around at the bottom of the building.

"Hmm. Lets go get a closer look. Observational distance -lets not pick unnecessary fights, K?" he said as he started to back away from the ledge...

"At this point I'm starting to doubt we'll even have a choice in the matter" responded Jacob with a shrug. Looking back towards a rather badly rusted door, he tilted his head thoughtfully. "What would you say the odds are this building has a serviceable stairwell?" he said, though it seemed less a question and more a suggestion the way he was heading towards the door...

"Fairly good chance, given the scans. Too slow for me, though. Plus, the suit wouldn't do to well in tight spaces." Kane replied. He then rushed forwards again, getting a running start before leaping off of the edge, dropping altitude quickly while gaining horizontal distance. By time he was at the lower floors of the building opposite the tower, he was already across the street.

The boosters fired a strong, short burst, cancelling his velocity and allowing Kane to touch down inside the remains of an office room. The large windows had long since been broken, leaving only jagged shards at the edges of the frame. Inside were desks littered with old papers which spilled onto the floor and potted plants that had blackened, shriveled and died.

His enhanced vision adjusted to the low light conditions and he proceeded to take readings on his surroundings. He had been correct in his belief that the Rift energy levels were much higher nearer to ground level...

Jacob wasn't far behind, leaping at a sprint from the edge of the building, his Anti-Grav emitters activating and entering standby-mode, boot heels shimmering a dim blue hue as he dropped, rapidly at first before slowing down dramatically as the emitters were engaged, the blue glow brightening as he hovered almost horizontally the rest of the way, practically walking into the room behind Kane as they deactivated. Glancing around, he took note of the Rift Energy signature; an ability Atlas had installed in his retinal enhancements before he left for the mission. It was no surprise the energy was vastly higher here. What did concern him however was the humanoid beings he had seen down below. He was fairly sure, to his limited understanding of how this energy worked, that beings unprotected from the Rift could suffer....complications. It made him wonder just what it was that was walking around down there. There were too few of them to be citizens of the city, as there weren't many true crowds. Glancing around the room however, he detected no notable life-signs, so whatever they were, they weren't fans of the architecture...

"Oh holy hell..." Kane muttered over the comms. He had turned his attention toward the street, zooming in on the creatures that roamed the desolate urban remains.

Quite a few of them were notably thin, but very tightly muscled. Their legs were long and raptor-like, their feet looked a bit like suction cups. Their arms were longer than those of a human, the elbows reaching past the thigh and the forearm longer still. Their hands also appeared to be suckers, like that of a large squid, with four large "beaks" on the wrist serving as claws. They did not appear to have discernible heads. Just...torsos. A matte black carapace covered their hide, sharp looking spikes and tusks poking out from their bodies in a myriad of ways, giving the creatures a strangely insectoid appearance...

Jacob looked back to see what Kane was looking at, an unamused stare being his response. "Wonderful. As if we didn't have enough problems" he commented as he turned away from the window...

" You planning on getting something, or are you leaving us?" Rebin asked as he got away from the turret and sat down.

Yukari looked at the coordinates on the display, narrowing her eyes. "That seems to be pretty close to here. If we head there, we should arrive there in a few minutes... but what's out there you need?" she asked, rubbing her forehead.

Damian examined the coordinates closely. It didn't seem that they were too inconveniently far away, and surely, Dietrich knew what he was doing. He'd been in the rift much longer they had been (or at least, he coudl assume so).

"Alright," Damian replied. "We'll head to your proposed coordinates, Dietrich."

The engiens roared and hummed, as the APC reared back to life once more.

"Shouldn't take more than a few minutes to get over there."

With those words, the APC soon sped off, heading towards the coordinates Dietrich pointed them towards....

"I am of little use to anyone as I am. But the outpost may have some equipment I could salvage. An APC, certainly. Possibly something even better. It could effectively double, triple, or even quadruple our firepower, depending on our luck, and may well speed up your mission. And should I decide I want to leave, well, I need simply to change course" explained Dietrich casually...

Damian said, "There may be some useful information for us there, as well. Perhaps the outpost picked up information on where the other probes are, as well. Hell, it might even have info on where the ANCHORS are!"

"Yeah, we do need to find those anchors" Yukari said. "But that ain't gonna be easy with so much out here wanting us dead, so the extra firepower of another APC would be very much welcome."

However, now Rebin was thinking about something, a thought that troubled him. "Even if we destroy the anchors, what if this rift world simply creates another anchor and just causes another world eating rift to appear in our world, and keeps doing it as many times as we try to stop it?"

"At least they aren't robots, right?" Kane replied, crouching down. "Actually, depending on how you see things, we actually got a break here...maybe."

He magnified the image of the chitinous creatures, which seemed to express some basic pack behaviors. They prowled across the asphalt and concrete, prying bits of rubble and debris from piles of trash that were strewn around the street with their suckers. The beaks on their hands started to "chew" on the bits of metal they picked up, working the scrap into their "palms".

"Er. They eat...scrap With their...hands..." he said flatly.
