So, all you MLP fans here at RPGTopia, what do you think of this news? I for one... think this actually isn't as bas as it sounds. It could be quite interesting to see what happens with this.

Dangit. Mind posting some of said steam chat here? Sounds like it was an interesting discussion.

Wasn't really anything noteworthy. Was more along the lines of "Wow this is actually happening. Bummer."

The more common reaction I'm seeing across the internet is,"WTF?!?! HASBRO HAS CONDEMNED US! I refuse to believe this exists! MLP is RUINED FOREVER!"

I myself am okay with this. For all we know, it could turn out genuinely good.

Basically it went from "don't count your chickens before they hatch" to "ITS HAPPENING".

At least for me anyway.

Twilicorn business was fine and all, I didn't have a problem, but after seeing Fighting is Magic canceled, the new series ********, them taking down videos from youtube, etc etc, it seems like the end may actually come after all.

Twilicorn: I'm okay with this. People need to stop complaining about it.

Fighting is Magic being cancelled: Bummer, but I can see why they did it from a legal standpoint after it showed up at EVO.

Humanized Ponies series: Eeeeeeh. I'll just be ignoring that one, probably. Unless it turns out really good. I mean, MLP itself turned out really good despite all appearances, right?

I don't really care if they're making a humanized series by this point. Honestly, people are overreacting way too much about this, and to that I say:

Fighting is Magic was doomed from the start, if you ask me - Hasbro has the right to crush it when it was illegal from the get-go.

Alicorn thing, can't really give an opinion since I don't watch the show; it could go either way.

Fighting Is Magic wasn't illegal though. Mane6 wasn't claiming to own the properties and all the content was original. By Fair Use copyright laws you'd think they'd be cut some slack, but no.

Which is especially shitty since they were doing it all free of charge, not even taking donations to fund the project. Hasbro can't claim they were profiting off of licensed material.

Actually, it was illegal, technically speaking. So is every scrap of fanart relating to MLP. But Hasbro ignores the little things, because it's a waste of resources. Why do you think Fighting is Magic lasted so long? Until EVO, when it was actually publicly recognized in an official capacity, Hasbro didn't bother them.

I can't explain it very well, but EqD did in this article: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2013/02/regarding-fighting-is-magic-takedown.html

Read that. They cover it pretty well.

I wouldn't say that it was "doomed", but there was always the risk. Hasbro knew that the peripheral fandom was basically injecting money straight into their eyeballs, hence why they just pretended that **** like Fighting is Magic (and the youtube uploads of the show) didn't exist. As long as they didn't acknowledge their existence, they weren't risking their copyright.

So either they suddenly decided to crack down because they are *** clowns, or someone pointed it out to them and basically made them legally required to shut it down if they wanted to keep the license.

Mane 6 knew what they were getting into. Its sad to see it go, but Lauren Faust offered to make them original characters so they could continue without stepping on Hasbro's toes.

Like I said, look at the article. I do believe its public presence at EVO, where it simply couldn't be ignored anymore, was the catalyst for all this.

On a COMPLETELY different note,

Grandparents and aunt arrived in Kuwait two day ago [visiting from the UK]. They just gave me...

A fossilised Ammonite [Grammoceras to be precise], from the Yorkshire coast. It's dated at 160 millions years ago, Jurassic period, and is about 5 cms [or 2 inches] across. :>

TT: Dm's probably right on that. The Luna Game series, after all, hasn't had any issues to my knowledge, or any other fanmade game. And on deviantart, there's fanart galore on the front page alone. :P (Believe me when I say I have a friend on there who would completely flip his sh*t if Hasbro demanded every fan's work be taken down.)

KP: All of my jealousy. D:

on topic:
Artists need to push for more control of their creative licenses. Fan art being compromised by big business just isn't acceptable. It's a crucial part of building a community around something and fans should have a right to celebrate their passion. Nobody's trying to make money out of Fan art, they're just doing it because they love it. I'd understand if somebody blatantly ripped off their characters and started selling it, but this is clearly not the case.

Granted, the presence of fan art detracts from a companies ability to merchandise a product but surely some sort of compromise can be made, where the company gets some sort of input into the fans work. Taking the example of a fan game, it's not impossible to imagine that a fan game could be used to promote the 'officially licensed' version, rather than compete with it.

Yes, in the end I blame the artists responsible for creating the show/game/whatever. They need to take a harder line about the control of their work. Publishing/production companies have much less power these days, and unless compromises can be worked out, there is going to be a series of collapses and both big business and IPs are going to go down the toilet.

Good quality. There's a bit of damage on the outer edge of the shell, but for the most part, it's intact. It is however, embedded in shale, but from what I've seen, that tends to be common with Ammonites.
