"Well isn't that wonderful" responded Jacob sarcastically as he walked amidst aisles separating office cubicles throughout the rooms, taking note of numerous roots weaving across the floor before him. it looked as though the rift energy may have mutated the office plants here, though the source of the roots wasn't exactly clear at this point...

It wasn't long before a slanted tower came into view. It wasn't large; three stories high at most, and it became thinner the higher up one went. At the base, a large shutter door could be seen, half open and caught on the roof of a wrecked APC. All around the facilities, shuddering, twitching monstrosities could be seen stumbling and hobbling back and forth. A few of the walking corpses looked different however; They had blackened skin and glowing orange eyes, a set of curved horns rising from their foreheads and arcing backwards. As they caught sight of the approaching APC, they hunched over, looking directly at the vehicle and letting out horrifying screeches, the demonic abominations breaking into a flat sprint towards the vehicle...

"Let's see if I can get the Perimeter defenses online" said Dietrich as he established a link with the base. "Okay....systems diagnostics coming back green...Several turrets....damaged. Ah! here we go. Establish IFF uplink...acknowledged....Firing in three....two.....one..." said the Commander, just as a blood stained panel on the tower slid aside, a corpse sliding down off of it and hitting the ground at the foot of the tower with a squelch, a long silver rod rising up out of the tower's slanted wall, parallel to the tower itself, several silver rings sliding up along it's length and locking into place before splitting, the rings beginning to rotate rapidly around the rod as it swung downwards and locked into place, aimed directly at the ground amidst several of the charging beasts. The tip flared a brilliant blue for a moment, before the ground between the beasts was obliterated, a massive pure white explosion engulfing the field of battle amidst the abominations, the shockwave shaking the APC and blinding all sensors for several moments. When the blast had cleared, only a massive black scorch mark was left in its wake, everything within several tens of metres reduced to blackened ash, the ground taking on an odd, wavy shockwave indentation where the weapon had struck...

"What would you even call them? Metal...Metal Munchers? Scientific name...Quisquiliarum Perussi?" Kane queried, turning away from the beings outside and following Jacob. "And where did they come from? Rift-mutants or an actual species from some doomed world?"

In spite of his heavy armor, his footsteps in the office were silenced by the advanced suspension system in the suit, but it barely fit through the spaces in between the cubicles. It didn't take long for him to notice the oddity sprawling across the floor, which only compounded his perplexed state. A scientist always strived for answers. The Rift provided a constant stream of questions.

"You can worry about the scientific questions. Only question that matters to me is whether they die when shot, and if not, how much it would take to keep them from getting up" said Jacob casually as he moved further into the room, something metallic and distinctly insect-like skittering past his feet as he walked by one of the cubicles...

"Well I guess I'll figure that out when- hold up. Suit's telling me we got movement. Small...but that isn't any normal cockroach." Kane reported. He raised his Rift energy projector, beginning to calibrate it for use. He didn't know the effects of using it around elevated levels of dimensional radiation...it was better to be safe than scrambled on a quantum scale.

"Noticed. Another thing you might want to take a look at are these bloody huge roots" said Jacob as he stepped over a particularly thick root. Indeed, they were far from natural considering what they would logically be. Rift energy flowed through the roots, albeit not in massive amounts, and it was obvious that whatever the roots belonged to was probably rather large...

"Gathering a sample." Kane stated, crouching down at the limb, finding it to be more akin to the root of a tree than any office shrubbery. Though thick, it lacked any timber, looking like a dark brown and green rubbery hose. A compartment on his chest flipped open and a small glass case was deployed on a mechanized rack.

Kane activated one of the Tri-Blade's cutting edges, slicing off a small bit of the plant and placing it in the sample box for further study. He also took a sample of the sap-like excrement that flowed from the incision, a viscous, amber colored paste...

"Excellent work, Dietrich," Damian said, before he got up from his seat and readied hsi weaponry. The huge man examined all of hsi tools. Resonance hammer... plasma saw.... grnade launcher... plasma magnum... com links.... rift energy sensors... and a portable map.... all in place, all on his person. The big man was ready to go!

"Rebin, Yukari, you two stay behind and guard the APC," Damian said. "I don't want to risk anything stealing or destroying this thing. Deitrich- we'll go and get you your own APC. I'd rather you not go in by yourself and risk gettign ambushed by whatever else may be lurknig about...."

"You do not give me enough credit, Damien. If anything, I should be vorried about you" responded the Commander as his gasmask hissed into place, his facial features disappearing behind it. "But, if you insist on accompanying me, I vill not stop you" he added as he made his way out of the vehicle, lights flickering across the outpost. A bellowing roar sounded from within what looked like the fortress's garage, a large mass of black sludge, human limbs embedded within it, smashed against the side of the wrecked APC, knocking it aside as an abomination crawled out, striding on its 5 slimy limbs as it made its way towards the group. A series of low booms sounded out in the surrounding area as whitish bolts smashed into the beast, blowing chunks off of it as the main turret charged, preparing to fire a second time. "Now ve play on mein terms" said the Commander, his voice slightly muffled by the gas mask...

A long, rumbling groan tore out through the facility as the root was slashed, Jacob raising his weapon and glancing back and forth, making sure nothing was making its way towards them. It appeared the roots were not quite plant matter. The amber liquid itself spiked and bubbled as it was examined, behaving almost as if it were, in itself, sentient. "Well that's something I haven't quite seen before....And there I was thinking I'd seen everything" said Jacob with a raised brow as he moved onwards...

Several windows appeared on Kane's view as the suit's internal equipment analyzed the samples, super enhanced images of DNA helices and cells displayed before his face. The cells themselves were mind boggling, for they were a yellowish-brown color with square cell walls, like those of plants. The organelles inside, however, showed traits of animal cells; and that each cell was able to live on their own, like a form of bacteria or virus.

What they had discovered was an organism that was a blend of three different types of biological systems! An organism that could act on its own as a single cell and rapidly evolve into something else entirely!

Damian levelled his grenade launcher at the abomination, the tip of his weapon glowing as he prepared to fire the explosive weapon.

"Let the games begin..." Damian said in a low voice from beneath his helmet. Now that he knew what these creatures were, and what it would take to slay one of these infected monstrosities. Not taking any chances, Damian fired his Grenade launcher at the approaching beast, the ahdesive explosive aimed straight at the humongous blob-like entity....

A sniper rifle fired from the right beside the APC, the round blasting through the shoulder of the abomination. Yukari loaded in another round and aimed, ready to fire, the woman perched right outside of the APC. Rebin himself was up on one of the turrets taking aim and firing at the hideous conglomerate of parts as well...

The blast blew a chunk out of the beast as it trudged towards them in a sickening display of semi liquid locomotion, the slimy-formed limbs forming a strange liquid gallop towards them. Several shimmering yellow orbs slid back and forth across it's glistening, convulsing surface, always facing its targets, suggesting they were in fact eyes. Chunks of it were being blown off constantly, though shortly after the strikes started, the slime stopped being blown off, instead splattering into long tendrils of slime that would pull themselves back towards the main body. Nevertheless, the constant bombardment of fire from the rifle, grenade launcher and perimeter defences was slowing it down, as it was constantly compensating for holes in it's limbs and body. Up on the tower, the main defence turret was revving up for another shot. Dietrich smirked as he watched calmly. He had no need to waste his current ammunition reservoir....the abomination's days were numbered...

In the office complex, Jacob noticed some of the roots were getting considerably thicker than he had expected them to. Gone were the inch thick tendrils of a thirsty office plant, and in their place were thick trunks as wide as human torsos. Along the walls, across the floors....it seemed wherever he looked, there they were; a massive wooden-like web constantly searching for sustinence. Along the roots were what looked like small bushes, morphed into odd and interesting shapes, resembling the decorative plants one would find in a well kept park or zoo or other such place. Leaves of the richest shades of blue, orange and pink grew from the plant's surface, looking, to the best of his knowledge, to be healthy and flourishing. It left him wondering how it managed to stay alive in such a place...

...That is, until it moved. Taking aim at the source of the movement, Jacob scanned it for signs of something within. Nothing. It was the plant itself that moved. "Um....Kane...It's just occurred to me that it's probably not a good idea to hang around for too long. What with the twitchy topiary lining the walls and all" he called from a hallway around the corner from where his companion was. The mercenary's keen survival instinct was screaming for him to get out of here, that that could well be the only sign he'd get that things here were much more dangerous than he had predicted...

"The 'twitchy topiary' is actually a form of nonlinear organism, Jacob," Kane started to explain over the private channel, his voice somewhat hushed even then. "It has the ability to split and branch off into different, sustainable biological structures and in spite of being a plant...it is able to actively respond to stimuli in the way an animal would...because it happens to be carnivorous...I don't need to explain what this means for us."

Kane readied his Tri-Blade projector and RC cannon. His little sample might have invoked a conflict with the alien meta-creature...

Just then, a chunk of the 'root' tore free, taking on an eerily humanoid form, arms wrapping around Jacob as he blew its upper portion clean off with a shotgun round, only for it to change form, creaking as it tried to attack his legs, the man kicking it hard, sending it slamming into the wall as he took aim with the shotgun, the added range making the blast more effective, tearing it apart. "We're leaving" said the Mercenary as the entire building seemed to groan with the anger of whatever monstrous beast dwelt within...

"Movement all around us. Same bio-sig as 'Twitchy'. Some signatures match the Metal Munchers outside." Kane replied, turning his head up to the ceiling. Snaking along the surface were barbed vines, pores like welts bulging and then releasing a screen of yellowish fog. Chemical scans done by the NT-SB armor concluded that it was corrosive in nature.

"Express exit, comin' up!" he exclaimed, turning his RC cannon to the wall and firing, the spiraling beam shredding the wall apart. Like a miniature twister, chips and chunks floated around it as it ate through the building, quickly making a tunnel through the office buildings that he and Jacob could make their way through...

Another sniper round tore into the thing's hide, and the turret kept up the pressure, never relenting on the conglomeration. Yukari reloaded the sniper as quickly as she could, before taking aim once more. Only then did she notice the main defence turret preparing for another shot. No need for her to make another shot... but just incase it survived...

Meanwhile, something was watching the group from afar, something lurking within the shadows in the distance...

A revving roar came from the turret on the tower as a bright, brilliant white flash temporarily blinded everyone in the area, Dietrich spared this fate thanks to his gas mask's built in protective light management system, the glare reflecting off the golden-tinted lenses of the mask as he watched calmly, putting a hand on his hat as a massive shockwave washed past him, hitting Damien directly and shaking the APC behind them. In the blast's wake....one more crater, and not a trace of the monstrosity that once stood in it's place. "Wunderbar" said Dietrich calmly as he dusted off his uniform and coat, before continuing onwards to the outpost. He had sent some rather heavy duty equipment here when communications went down. If he was lucky, it would still be intact...

Jacob was through the pathway almost the instant the cannon stopped firing. Another horrendous groan rang out through the building as the entire structure seemed to shake, drawing questions as to the scale of whatever was behind the tendrils. Either way, he had no intention of finding out...that wasn't what he was here for...

Damian didn't even need to fire another shot, before the blob-like monstrosity had been destroyed by the tower's defensive weaponry. Damian followed Dietrich closely, constantly scanning the area for potential threats lurking in the outpost. Son far, his vision caught nothing in its range... though his helmet's sensors, plus the scanners on the APC (to which he was linked to) sensed other monsters lurking nearby. Jamming a new clip in, and tossing aside the old, empty one, Damian kept his Grenade Launcher at the ready....

Yukari and Rebin's eyesight was quick to come back to them, and they had managed to brace themselves for the impact of the defense shot. With both Damian and Dietrich heading into the base, they stayed by the APC, to keep watch incase something else where to show up outsode of the outpost...

The armored scientist thudded down on the other side of the tunnel, turning his gun back down where he and Jacob came from. Ravenous, spiked vines snaked their way towards them from the jagged passage, visibly morphing and evolving at a mind boggling rate.

"Damn it, Twitchy! Stay back!"

Kane fired the Rift energy beam down the tunnel in a short burst, ripping the plant-like creatures apart and splattering the sap-like fluid on the walls. More of them started to advance however, squelching and hissing as they came.

"Where too now, Jacob?" Kane asked as he worked on suppressing the tendrils...
