"Left!" responded Jacob immediately as he saw tendrils pour through a doorway up ahead; the only doorway in the room. To his left was a window, overlooking the street, a second building standing across the street. The pane of glass that covered the wall had long since been shattered, so it wasn't difficult for Jacob to suddenly launch himself to the left, thrusters roaring to life as they launched him across the gap, the tendrils splitting up as some lunged for Kane, while others reached out of the window in vain to try and catch Jacob...

Dietrich was soon standing at the entrance of the underground garage beneath the forward base. He was disappointed to learn, however, that two APCs were wrecked in the entrance, crossing off the entrance, sealing off access to the underground garage where the vehicle he hoped to obtain most likely awaited. Checking the building's schematics and sensors, it was confirmed that there were two vehicles in the basement level of the facility, both giving off heat signatures, though one, the one he intended to take, was also detected to be inactive. That meant it was the vehicle's reactor. The other however, had no explanation. Perhaps it was started, but the crew never got the chance to get out before they were killed? It was something he would have to investigate. "Please identify yourself via RANK and FULL NAME now, to authorise access to the facility" came an automated message from the facility. "Obergruppenfuhrer Dietrich Dasler" responded Dietrich. It had his DNA signature and retinal signature. The voice recognition was primarily just the system being ultra careful; a sign it was still on full alert, as it had been shortly before the facility cut all communication with the primary base. It was then that Dietrich had sent a force to investigate and secure the base. The fact one of the vehicles he sent was parked in the basement told him a grim story; the investigation force had been killed after their arrival. One of the vehicles he sent was now a flaming husk on the roof of the Primary Base. The other two appeared to be in the underground garage. As a portion of the wall slipped back and parted for Dietrich to enter, two holographic Nazi banners appeared on either side of the 'door', the entrance welcomed for the former general of this forsaken army...

The tendrils were met with a quick swipe from the three particle blades, cutting off the initial strike. Kane's boosters fired up and pointed away from the oncoming assault, the armored suit hurtling out of the window in reverse. A cluster of vines burst out afterwards, connected to a giant root system, the bundle of ravenous plant material extending over the ruined street for several meters and the tendrils themselves stretching several more, lunging for the two as the Metal Munchers below turned their attention to the commotion...

Elsewhere in the base, a figure stirred from their bedroll. The flat mattress was laid out in a small room that was more like a glorified closet than anything else. Shelves full of spare parts and other scrap lined the walls and a single light offered illumination from the center of the ceiling. He sat up, the dull white light shining down directly on him.

What was that noise? He hadn't heard anything like it since he restored power to the base...a distant humming and mechanical drone. The sound of machinery! Someone had managed to reactivate some systems! But what functions were running and who was the one responsible?

And most importantly -was that thing gone!?

The young man shot to his feet, fully decked out in his covert combat suit, his helmet firmly planted on his face. He rushed over to the large pack that braced against the light gray wall, next to the jagged cracks that ran up its height. He put it on and pulled out his main gun from the straps on the pack's side. It was mostly rectangular in shape up until its rear, where its butt dipped down and broke the uniform shape. At the front were two barrels, one small one over the larger bottom one.

Cautiously, the soldier opened the door, holding the dual-firing gun at waist level and easing the door open with a foot. He was greeted with the blood stained hallway, the lights just as dim as they were in the other room...and flickering.

As if reacting to his thoughts, a small lamp deployed from the side of the gas mask, mounted onto the large optic device that protruded somewhat from it. It shined a bright beam of light down the decrepit straight, littered with debris and painted red.

"What if they come back out running and being chased by something?" Yukari asked Rebin. The two were waiting inside the APC for Dietrich and Damian to come back out. Yukari had suggested they should move the APC closer to the outpost, but Rebin wasn't so sure that was a good idea.

"Well, they'd get some exercise running if that's the case." Rebin chuckled. "Besides, I think all the zombies and whatnot that were in have been killed off already. You saw how many we took out"

"And what if some monstrosity is still inside there that neither of them can handle? Even if there wasn't, it wouldn't hurt to pull the APC closer to the base." Yukari replied, rubbing her forehead. It was still feeling oddly warm. She hoped it was just the heat of the sun that was causing it.

"Alright. We'll pull it up." Rebin said as he took the seat of the APC. The vehicle drove up closer to the base, before stopping a mere 30 feet away from the enterance...

This place told a similar story to that of the fate of Dietrich's original base. This whole place was essentially in ruins- destruction was all over the place, and no signs of human life could be traced by Damian's senors. Though he certainly picked up lots of the strange mutants' life signatures, he couldn't find one damned survivor. Jesus, was this slime really that potent?! Thankfully, it seemed the security systems were still working, as Dietrich was able to open the door, which meant he didn't have to destroy anything and possibly catch those monsters' attentions. As the big burly man entered the room. Damian noted the holographic nazi symbols adorning the walls. Though it shook his core to be standing in the presumed headquarters of a branch of one of the most evil political machines ever created, he ignored it as best he could. He had a job to fulfill.

"How much farther until we reach the vehicle you're looking for?" Damian inquired, clutching his grenade launcher tightly. His scanners were constantly alert, acting as a second pair of omnipotent eyes. He didn't want to get ambushed, like they had been last time.... his arrogance nearly got them killed on multiple occasions.

"Ve need to descend to the basement level, und then move through the facility's barracks to the Garage and Maintenence area of the facility" explained Dietrich as he walked into the outpost, finding himself in a fairly large room with a shimmering ring in the middle. A groan could be heard above, and an upwards glance drew Dietrich's attention to movement on an upper floor, something skittering out of sight. It seemed to have been moving on the ceiling of the floor it was on. Wonderful. As if walking corpses weren't bad enough, now they were moving defying gravity too...

Twisting mid air, Jacob launched an RC Snare at the vines, the purple-white orb soaring across the gap between the two soldiers and the tendrils, striking the tendrils at their source in the window, a crackling buzz and bellowing groan ringing out as the snare destroyed the areas of the tendrils going through it's barriers, severing them at the window, everything beyond that raining down to the street below as Jacob landed in a backwards roll inside the adjacent building, twisting round and taking aim with his assault rifle, an old, partially decayed waste bin by his feet cleaved in half by a Monoblade, molten edges leaking onto the marble floor beneath him...

Kane thudded down off to Jacob's side, his thoughts shooting through his mind a mile a minute. "That won't hold them back for long..." he muttered, looking out of the building through its partially collapsed wall. With quick thinking, Kane raised the RC launcher and cranked up the energy level. Now that he and Jacob were far enough away, he could use it with a general sense of safety. Emphasis on general.

He took aim and fired the spiraling beam into the building, shredding the upper level wall which then rained down on the room he and Jacob had just come from, burying the tendrils' exit...for now.

Private panned his light back and forth down the dim hallway, noting that the blood stains were evident of one continuous motion rather than random smears across the tiled floor. In addition to the dark stains on the walls and floors, there were grooves raked into the hallway, frayed wires spilling out of a few of them. This made the discovery of a terminal an especially tense one, as the young man approached its dark screen expecting it to be offline.

Fortunately for him, however, upon touching the keypad its screen lit up, glowing brighter than usual in the low light. Private's gaze jerked up and he looked from side to side, making sure there wasn't anything else with him in the passageway.

"Hello? Hello? Is anyone out there...?" said the soldier over the base's comms, hoping that his connection hadn't been severed...

Damian, too, noted the movements of th creatures. Though he himself could not see them, his sensors picked something up.... and he didn't like it. Damian kept his grenade launcher ready, keeping track of where the abnormalities were coming from. The last thing he wanted was to get ambushed...

"Identify yourself soldier" responded Dietrich as the private's voice came up on the comms, the Commander stopping for now to find out where he was. He had assumed his entire force had been killed, but here was a sign that perhaps that was not necessarily true. It gave Dietrich hope...perhaps not all was lost afterall. Still, he didn't let his hopefullness distract his mind; his weapon was live, his finger on the trigger, and his HUD tracking any and all environmental movement, perimeter sensors keeping him informed on anything behind him...

"Hm. Handy little thing, that cannon of yours" remarked Jacob with a smirk, before turning round and beginning to examine the building they had landed in...

"Identification number 11801, commander." the soldier replied, elated to know that his commanding officer was still alive. The others...were not so fortunate. He had been there when they...perished. In comparison to their fates, he had gotten off easy. He could have been in a much worse situation.

"Its not over yet, Jacob. Twitchy is a lot larger than we thought...detecting its bio-signs here too. I don't think it knows where we are yet, though...lets keep it like that." Kane replied in a hushed tone over the private link.

"Vhat is your location and condition, private?" questioned Dietrich, recognising the rank from the identification number. he narrowed his eyes as he reached for his pistol, drawing the black and gold weapon as a cylinder on the inside of the frontal area of the weapon shimmered with energy, the built in Mass/Energy conversion reactor blaring to life as a gurgling sound came from the floor directly above him. He noted blips on his radar, marking creatures with vital signs, however irregular they were. He wasn't sure what form of abominations lurked these halls...but they would learn to fear him, just as his men feared them before they were slain...

"Agreed" responded Jacob calmly, putting away his weapons and deactivating the monoblades, sensors mapping the building for all signs of life, the web of tendrils seemingly absent here, though probably existent further down. He was less worried about escaping the plant than he was about Felicity; the craft was their only mode of transportation, and though he had seen the schematics for the Heavy VTOL, he hadn't had enough time to learn how tough it could be, and that, made him uncomfortable...

Damian simply stayed quiet for the moment. Looks like there were survivors of this catastrophe after all. The movements of the monsters on the ceiling made him uneasy, as his scanners literally sensed them right over his head. The room had gone painfully quiet; there was almost no movement at all, and not a single sound from the creatures was audible. His scanners told him that creatures suddenly stopped moving, as if they sensed something dangerous. Clearly, whatever it was, it wasn't them, or else they would have acted similarly earlier.

Suddenly, his scanners began to beep deafeningly loud in his ears, and the ceiling dwelling mutants seemed to scatter, escaping to what he presumed were their "burrows" of sorts. The ceiling creatures' life signatures soon dispersed rapidly from their location, before his scanners targeted a large anomoly approaching from within the outpost itself. His scanners failed to pick up any information on what it was, outside of "large anomoly- avoid at all costs", which was NEVER a good sign....

As if having the same train of thought, Kane brought up the map generated by the ship, the display on his screen showing a wide radius of grays and black where the roads divided the city into many small sections. "Moving Felicity to a more accessible location. I don't think we'll be heading back up that tower; not after what we've had to go through." he said, sending the order.

"Sub-basement level, in between the barracks and the garage, commander." the private answered. He looked up from the terminal again, his shuffling movements audible over the feed as he glanced from side to side, once again making sure he was not in immediate danger. "My condition...is nominal. I can still fight." he added...

"Good" said Jacob, inwardly amused at how quick Kane was to pick up on that. Perhaps there was more in common between the boy and his father than he thought. "Any information on a potential tether?" he asked as he paced through the building, on alert for signs of trouble, though not making his way in any particular direction yet...They needed an estimate first...

"Wunderbar. Vell, in that case, gather your equipment und veaponry und prepare to depart. Ve're making our vay to the garage to retrieve the Streitaxt...Estimated arrival time two minutes, barring interference from the monstrosities svarming this facility" responded Dietrich as his own proximity warnings brought to attention something new. This was no victim of the cursed Decay that had claimed the soldiers...no. Its vital signs were too strong for that. This was a rift mutant...

"Not in this immediate area, strangely enough. I'd like to find out how Rift energy collects...by ways of logic, you'd expect such high radiation to result in a tether forming but...nothing on my sensors show any quantum links and disturbances." Kane said. Shortly after, the distant drone of Felicity's jets was audible passing overhead, the ship flying high to avoid creating more of a disturbance in the vicinity of the two explorers.

Not that it went completely unnoticed. The rubble burying the side of the opposite building began to crumble, small pieces rolling down the hill of concrete and metal before progressively larger chunks went thumping down the slope.

"....But the studies can wait until a more...opportune time." said Kane as he started to back away into the room, out of direct sight.

"Commander...there seems to be a situation in the garage...the...carnage in this hallway is smeared out in one direction...I believe the others might still be there..." the private reported, the image of warping flesh and muscle flashing in his mind. He shook his head. That thing wasn't his fellow brothers in arms. It was a twisted mistake of nature...or what counts as nature in this forsaken realm...

The creatures in the room did not budge from the their location; they sensed the rift monster's approached and did not want to risk beign attacked. Heavy footfalls could be heard approaching from within the compound, and a deep, monstrous inhale was also heard. Damian leveled his grenade launcher in the direction of the noise, his sensors growing more intense as the beast approached. Within a few seconds, the heavy footfalls were heard right outside of the room they were in, the door being the only thing between them and whatever horrific mutant lay in store for them. Another deep inhale was heard, and was soon followed by a gutteral roar and a series of dents being formed into the door. Damian backed away and aiemd his weapon at the door. He was gonna blow that beast to kingdom come the moment it ripped the door down....

Dietrich didn't even wait. Taking aim, he fired with the pistol, a whitish bolt streaking across the gap between them and boring through the door, the plasma tipped armour piercing round eating through the material with little difficulty, hitting the creature beyond as the round halted, detonating on a molecular level, a stream of flame shooting through the hole as the door was dented severely from the blast. Dietrich quickly switched to his assault rifle, taking aim in case it recovered. "Ve vill tend to zem in due time. For now, prepare yourself to mobilise und gather vhat munitions und resources you can" he responded through the comms in a forced calm; He had to show confidence regardless of the situation...it would help the soldier gather the strength of will he needed to push onwards...

Jacob didn't respond. He simply pressed onwards into the depths of the building, looking for a stairwell; an express ticket to the street level. This area of the city was too varied in altitude between buildings for him to use the rooftops. And jumping from window to window, while swift, meant he would have to rely on the internal structure of the building to give him his path...

A horrifying bellow of pain rattled both Dietrich and Damian, before the hulking monstrosity that lay beyond the door smashed its way through, its form burnt and smoking, but overall intact. The low light did little to show the minute details of the monster, but its basic appearence was visible. The abomination had absolutely enormous forelimbs. Each of the arms was easily the width of Damian's torso, and ended with hands armed with massive, scythe like talons. Its head, of which 1/3 was an enormous mouth filled with massive, knife-like teeth, made up almost all of its upper torso. The monstrosity lacked eyes, presumably due to living primarily within the darkness of the abandoned outpost; instead, it had a massive set of nostrils, and long "whiskers" that portruded from each side of its head, allowing it to "see" the environment around it. As soon as the creature showed itself, Damian blasted it with his grenade launcher. Another explosion engulfed the monstrosity eliciting another horrific cry of pain as the beast stumbled to the floor. The rift-born mutant soon rose to its feet, angered and wounded, before it lashed out, ripping up a slab of steel from the floor and tossing it towards the 2 explorers. Damian rolled to the side to avoid the mutant's attack....

Private did not reply, hearing the sounds of gunplay. His departing footsteps echoed over the comms, the man himself seeming to fade with the sound...

Kane found this building to be more residential than the others. A small apartment building with scattered furnishings dotting the rooms. The place was in utter disrepair, discolored by dust and time. The ceiling was cracked, streams of light pouring in from the multiple moons looming just beyond the sky. Navigating the obstacle course as best as he can, the armored explorer came to the door that was just a few sizes too small.

"Big fish in a small pond..." he joked over the link, activating one of the energy blades and beginning to cut a more accommodating exit.

Dietrich leapt to the side and took cover behind a pillar in one side of the room, twisting out behind it as he fired another round from his gun, the bullet punching through it's distorted torso before exploding within, the creature no longer having the benefit of the armoured door to protect it...

Jacob chuckled at the comment, though it was somewhat shallow; his mind was occupied by the threat the plant posed, the Mercenary already devising a way to kill it off...

Kane set the door gently down on yellow linoleum tiles that were as stained and drab as everything else in the ruins. Now able to exit the apartment, he stepped out into the hallway, finding that half of it had given way ages ago. Where other apartments were supposed to be was openess; the floors jagged and broken leading up to the abrupt break in the building. The rubble was dispersed in a pile about five floors below, the black shapes of Metal Munchers collecting around it as they pursued the two...
