The humanoid abomination let out an annoyed hiss, seemingly disappearing as soon as it had been spotted and fired upon. Whether it was sucked into the singularity or fled on its own accord was a mystery, but whatever it was, it seemed to have vanished from the general vicinity. The crew's mechanics whirred deafeningly still, before the electronic roar soon died down, signalling the creature's absence. Damian kept himself firm, and immediately began to head towards the probe, despite the shock of the events that had unfolded but a few seconds before.

"Just what we need... more surprises," Damian grumbled into the communicator, static still evident....

"Even worse, who knows what monsters here are real, and which ones aren't." Rebin said as he sighed mentally. This place was messing with his mind. These hallucinations... were they caused by whatever was creating the darkness, or by something else? Worse, there was no way of knowing what was fake and what was real until either ammo had been used on it, or if it had gotten them. And that other thing that had tried to get him but was denied by Dietrich... it had seemed all too familiar, if not different in appearance...

Dietrich shuddered as the wisp flew through him, the chill running through him briefly before his uniform compensated. Regaining his focus, he glanced at his comrades. "The sooner ve're done vith this place, the better. Onvards" said Dietrich as he pressed forwards, weapon at the ready as he reached into a pocket, drawing a small device that looked like a revolver, a short thick barrel visible as the exit point for its ammunition. Three cylinders, organised into a triangle, were located behind the barrel, each of the three rotating on their own, glowing streaks visible along the length of the cylinders. A flare gun. "I think ve can all agree that night vision technology von't be enough here, ja?" he said...

Jacob glanced through one of the monitors using an observation camera to show him what Kane was seeing. A quick, observant glance told him all he needed to know. They were poorly equipped, but sufficiently so to survive. They lacked any form of construction methods aside from patching together scrap from the environment, and their defences were likely fairly basic, though he was careful not to take that for granted; last thing he wanted was a nasty surprise in the form of a high powered plasma machinegun or something else equally destructive. "Take us somewhere the Felicity'll be safe. I think this calls for a bit of investigation"

"On your end, perhaps," the Private said over Dietrich's comms. "It appears that I am far enough from the epicenter that I am only marginally impaired by that... thing's influence on its surroundings. I am using the Wustenfuchs as a buffer."

Though blurred and occasionally jittery, Private's vision in the shroud of darkness did not fail him, not completely. That did not help him much, however, given the illusions which manifested within the shadows. His HUD targeted them as if they were any real entity and after firing an ETF shell through, they dispersed like phantoms. This realm was truly accursed... if Heaven and Hell existed, they probably fell prey to this ravenous dimension eons ago.

"Scanners don't show any signs of life there... seems...abandoned, but..." Kane tapped his fingers over a few keys, a series of circles and squares rotating as they traveled across the settlement as it appeared on the Felicity's procedurally generated map. Crisscrossed by white coordinate guides and given an orange tint, the black markers stood out starkly as they converged over the buildings within the scrapheap compound.

"Picking up some anomalous readings all the same... setting the bird down."

The craft swung around to pass over the wall, then came to a hover, descending slowly over a stone mosaic that was worn and dirtied over time, dust being blown about by the three-engine gust. Loose fabric, torn and aged flapped like the ragged flags upon a decimated battlefield...

"There's no guarantee that what's waiting for us down there is alive, per se" said Jacob as he checked his gear, still on him from the previous engagement, though now he had restocked and added a few things he might find use from, including a few cluster-grenades for situations where normal explosives and plasma bombs weren't effective...

"And that's the scary part... but data is data. Any little insight into how this place works means a better chance of surviving it," Kane replied as he started to unbuckle himself. Once out of his seat, he walked over to the NT-SB storage unit, entering the room and getting into the mechanized suit...

Jacob meanwhile, made his way to the airlock, the remote connection to Felicity's systems allowing him to examine the various scanning tools available to it, using them to get a comprehensive read-out of the surrounding area, in hopes of making exploration more simple. "Hm...Kane, does Felicity have penetrative scanning abilities? Considering what we saw with Twitchy earlier, there's a possibility this lot may have an underground base of some sort" he called from the still open airlock...

"Concentrated pulse-imaging system. Focuses Rift energy to create something like a radar image. Thing is, there's so much of it here the return would just be a blur. The reserve radio systems might fare better, though," Kane replied over the communication system before he stepped out into the airlock proper in the exploration armor. "It's funny you ask. I was thinking of heading into the underground to see if there wasn't a tether Twitchy's become friends with or something there..."

Jacob chuckled at the revelation. "There's just no beating good old fashioned radar" he commented as the airlock closed behind them, the air pressure equalising as the door opened. "Considering its size, I'd hardly be surprised if that were the case" said Jacob as he glanced around at the surrounding patchwork village, marble, concrete, wood and metal roughly hewn together to form shacks that reminded him curiously of the Indian slums back in the 2000s...

"Well then, I'd say we have a plan!" Kane said, stepping out into the open and thudding onto the brickwork plaza. The forcefield pylons started to extend at that moment, the ship's defenses activating. Flipping panels and shifting metal brought the perimeter guns out on top of the ship, which swiveled back and forth, scanning the area for threats.

"Priming the charge for preliminary mapping system... until then let's see if we can't find a way down before we have to make one..."

"W-w-what issss th-thisss?"

The voice, sounding much like serpents speaking in chorus, wafted out from behind a dark and dreary structure to Kane's right, like a foul smell upon an afternoon breeze. Some strange, ethereal flickering could be seen in the darkness, but no amount of light could illuminate what lay within.

"S-s-such warmth...Su-u-ch light...W-w-why do you bring thisss to the kingdom of the d-d-dead?"

"We're window-shopping" responded Jacob casually as he scanned the area, pinpointing the source but, surprisingly, being unable to identify what exactly it was, impenetrable darkness seeming to engulf whatever was speaking...

"... Welp. I do believe we've found the source of our mysterious data returns. If only everything could be so quick and easy..." Kane replied, though he was decently alarmed by the development. So far, all their encounters centered around the physical and corporeal. This entity, however, appeared almost ghostly in nature and its voice suited it in kind...

Yukari stayed focused with her sniper rifle. These hallucinations... she didn't want to waste ammo on what wasn't real, but it was near impossible to tell what was and what wasn't, especially with the nature of the rift at hand. Likewise, her equipment hadn't been hampered too much by the arrival of that thing, so she was still able to see with her night vision equipment... The sooner they were done with this, the better.

Following Dietrich, Rebin had the plasma gun readied as well, his eyes seeing the faint outlines of phantoms and other spectral monsters moving through the darkness. The probe was just up ahead, and then they'd be out of this freakshow place. And yet, was it really worth it to get the probes now? They already knew that this rift world was hellish and evil, Whatever information they could gather from it would only be for themselves, with them trapped here with their mission...

"Well... that's good at least," Damian said through the communicators. "Keep a sharp eye for any suspicious activity... though I'm sure you already have that aspect covered."

The sounds of a low growls culd be heard nearby the group from within the darkess, as multiple small, roughly 3-foot tall shapes could be seen shuffling through the dark, observing the group from a distance. While these creatures seemed cautious, no doubt after seeing the groups' display of firepower, Daman couldn't help but feel that the revenant was still watching them, just out of sight. Thankfully, the probe was nearby, his sensors picking up its signal in a small shed located a few meters ahead of them...

In response, a strange, serpentine object weaved its way into the open space before them, shadows trailing behind it. Despite the lights shining directly upon it, its features were just barely visible midst the darkness: a skull-like face, apparently human, with long, pointed fangs that appeared to be made of the same charred bone as its face, stretching down its face where its bottom jaw should have been. The shadowy "neck" seemed to stretch to an impossible length, implying there was more to the entity which had not yet come out of the darkness.

"The-ere is no p-p-place for you-u here," the entity rasped, though its mouth did not move. Its face was awfully close by now, turning from side to side as if it couldn't get a good look at them. "B-b-but the-ere will b-b-be sssoon."

"Rebin, retrieve the probe. Ve'll cover you" said Dietrich as he identified the source of the probe's signal, using the Wustenfuchs' scanning capabilities to further amplify the team's mapping and scanning abilities...

"Then clearly there's no sense in us leaving" said Jacob as he eyed the serpentine extension of what he suspected was a much larger entity. What little he could identify of the tendril's consistency with his various vision modes told him it was definitely ethereal...but it sadly did not tell him just what it was. A 'ghost'? A 'demon'? At this point, there was no telling what it was. It reminded him of some things he had encountered in the past, particularly the Cthulu incident, but even they weren't quite like what he was looking at now...For once, the Mercenary could definitely say he was looking at something new...

"Well if you aren't one spooky *******..." Kane thought, completely thrown for a loop as to what to make of this. What manner of scientific approach could he take to find out more about this presence? Furthermore, what could he and Jacob do if it proved hostile? Relativity-Coil technology might have worked on the basis of dimensional entanglement, but was there anything to entangle with this being?

It was something of a morbid curiosity for the explorer...

"Y-you f-f-fear me?" the entity questioned, suddenly turning its sightless gaze toward Kane. "Ahhh...Yesss, I sm-smell it now," it continued, the bizarre skull of a head turning 360 degrees in place as it watched the man. "A d-d-dangerousss reaction. Sssome wou-uld find it... irresistible."

"They'll learn to resist it soon enough" said Jacob in response. "Now, mind telling us what the entire point of this conversation is? Seems to me you're just here to have a go at my friend here" he added through narrowed eyes...
