That's a pretty valid point. It might be difficult to actually kill the zombies with accurately with melee weapons like short swords and spears, especially when fighting superior numbers. Fatigue would be a big issue as well, more so for the phalanx than the legion.
The men at the front would tire quickly and they would have to break formation to relieve them.
Then again breaking formation wouldn't be as dramatic against zombies as it would be against armed attackers.
Fatigue would probably be the biggest issue faced with it, as ammunition is the biggest issue faced by fire arms.
You would need a lot of troops to be able to hold out indefinitely against a dense horde.
