Saw a trailer for part two of The Hobbit that was shown at a fan event. Was hoping for an extra shot or two of Smaug in it, but it was still a good trailer.

Remember that time it got possessed by the fifth demon of hell? That was kind of rad.

I'm currently reading a book about Viking History. One of the places brought up in the book was a visited by my mom and sister when they went to Norway.

Sounds cool, IK. Funnily enough, family's just started watching a new series called Viking. I haven't watched it yet, but it's apparently really good.

Evidently it's a myth that Vikings ever actually wore horned helms.

Yeah. Heard that. Makes sense when you think about it. Installing the horns would mean putting a structural weakness in the helmet itself. Only circumstance I could think of where it'd make sense is as a Viking leader's crown during celebrations or other such circumstances.

How would putting horns on a helmet make the helmet weaker?

You'd have to hollow the helmet where the horns will be attached. As opposed to a uniform coverage of armor, the helmet would be weaker where the horns are. The horns, not being made of metal, would then be a weakness in battle.

Well apparently only one fully intact helm has ever been found that can unquestionably be identified as 'viking', so we can't be sure either way.

I would say you can't really lock down a particular way of doing things as being 'viking' when the term applied to a large and probably diverse group of people. Everyone would have sourced their own equipment anyway and it's not beyond reason that some of them would have adorned their helmets with horns. They largely targeted villages, monasteries and poorly defended towns so small impracticalities wouldn't have been a big deal.
