They are now if you remember this if you read the books:
Ra'Zac: The Ra'Zac are a creature that is of no known or classified category (or plant in case you are wondering). They are referred to as "Dragon Hunters" and are dangerous, mainly at night. When they become fully grown the Ra'Zac's exoskeleton changes, forming them into a bat-like creature that will set out to dominate over a territory, anywhere it pleases and will attack anything that moves. This bat-like creature is called a Leatherback or Lehrblaka in the elvish language. The Ra'Zac are fast, swift and deadly however, in their younger form they are no match for Dragon Riders who are their worst foe. Also they are weak against light and cannot swim in water either and so stay well clear of water altogether if they have to. However their parents can fly the young across the ocean. The Ra'Zac communicate with one another with a series of clicks and other sounds but can speak human language too. Also a Ra'Zac, once it knows the scent of its prey, its prey cannot escape, the Ra'Zac can track prey wherever it goes. However, the Ra'Zac were a serious pest in Alagaesia (homeland of Ra'Zac is currently unknown at this moment) and so the king over Alagaesia sought out the Dragon Riders (Dragon Riders were not under command by anybody, they were their own rank, surpassing any invented and only humans and elves could become dragon riders) to eradicate the Ra'Zac. Of course many of the Ra'Zac were found and slaughtered soon after but two Ra'Zac escaped (two Letharbacks along with their young) but when the Fall of the Riders age came to be, Lord Galbatorix sought out the Ra'Zac and made a deal with them to go find any dragon eggs and in exchange for human flesh (a diet for the Ra'Zac, which is probably why you would not want to meet them). The Ra'Zacs home is in Helgrind (a very deathly place where rituals are done) and so have an air of command over basic troops (as seen in Eldest when they raid Carvahall). The Ra'Zac will not come after an enemy when the enemy suspects them but will only come when they least expect them. With all the Dragon Riders gone (the only two known dragon riders alive are Eragon and Oromis) the Ra'Zac have a lot of food source for them.
Anything else you want to know just ask me, I can tell you a lot about the Eragon series. I should probably mention the age of the Dragon Riders.
Before humans came (they did at one point but left and never returned for a long time) to Alagesia, the Dwarves used to own Alagaesia (not just the Dragons who origined from the Haradrac Desert) and then the Elves arrived and then a war began between Dragons and Elves shortly after when a dispute came out about one race killing the other. But then after a long war, an Elf called Eragon (this was an Eragon from a long time ago, not the same one) found a Dragon Egg and raised the baby dragon inside of it and that allowed the first Dragon Rider to be named (the dragon is nameless) and through their magic created a bond between dragon and elf. They managed to stop the war and the Elves came to an agreement with the Dragons, of course it was not through contract as Dragons do not sign paper. They instead linked both two races together and the magic between the Dragons and Elves created a bond like no other. The Elves were born magic as it was in their veins much like blood and also their blood ran thick with the magic. The same was with the Dragons. The link between the two forged a new class called the Dragon Riders. The Dragons created magic that, when they had eggs, the eggs were passed through the Elves. The embryo dragon was able to determine which person best suited itself and hatched for that person only. The Dragon Riders had a leader, Vrael (his dragon unknown) and when the Dragon Riders each finished their training went under the guidance of Vrael to do his tasks. The Elves became immortal through the dragon's magic (but not to cuts or wounds, they could die but not from old age) as the Dragons were able to age forever. Eventually the humans arrived and they were soon added to the Dragon Riders ranks as well (but they too had their society). The Dwarves and Dragons were unable to come to agreement with each other and so to the time Eragon the 2nd rose there has been no Dwarf Rider. Of course, all the races were able to live in peace and the riders were trained in a land called Vroenguard (there is a lot in Eldest that goes on with the humans especially but i won't go into that much). At one point in time a young apprentice Dragon Rider (a Human) named Galbatorix was born. He was an excellant Dragon Rider and so graduated and he and two friends along with their dragons went off into the mountains to celebrate. However they were foolish and did not realize that the Urgals lived in the area. They were ambushed but though the Urgals that attacked the group were killed, so was Galbatorix's two friends and their dragons along with his own (his dragon is unknown, only that its a female) and so went absolutely mad. When a Dragon dies, the rider can go a bit insane like part of their body dies but if the Rider dies then so will the Dragon. Galbatorix wanted to die, but death never came. He was in such a rage that nothing dared venture too close. Then Glabatorix at one point, weak and tired and suffering from malnutrition, had an idea that the Council of Dragon Riders might grant him a new dragon. Eventually he collapsed and a farmer found him. Eventually restored, Galbatorix was sent by the farmer back to the Dragon Riders and so went to the council. He demanded that he should be allowed another dragon. However the Council saw what Galbatorix was to become, evil. They denied his requests and so Glabatorix was mad. He wanted revenge, he came upon another rider called Morzan, also seeking vengance on the Council (unlike Galbatorix, Morzan had his own dragon) and then he along with a number of others, all seeking the same goals got together and began killing off the council, they first started with a Council member by luring him into some bushes and then killing him. Galbatorix started off by killing his mentors first off and then other members of the Council. At this time another rider, Brom was another apprentice who was trained by Oromis and his Dragon, Glaedr. Brom was trained alongside Morzan. Brom thought of Morzan as his equal and would not leave him or bring misfortune (much like mateship as we like to call it in Australia). Of course Brom and his dragon Saphira (there was a previous Saphira) had no idea of Morzan's intent. And then came the day when Galbatorix and Morzan went into Dras'Leona and did the worst crime possible: they killed the rider of a newborn dragon and stole the baby dragon. Galbatorix took the baby black dragon and used dark magic to make it his partner and named it Shruikan (but the link of course is not a proper link between dragon rider, more of a perverted union) and when Shruikan grew to a size, news got out to the Council of the crime and Brom felt betrayed. Galbatorix and the riders who followed under him were named the Fornsworn and set about "eliminating the competition" as a huge war began. Brom's dragon Saphira died in one battle. And the elves king Evandar was also slain. The Fornsworn were too powerful for the Council and the apprentice dragon riders and slaughtered them all. Brom and Oromis were captured at one point and tortured. Oromis created auras around himself after the Fornsworn broke something within himself that allowed him to live (it is unknown what it is) but cursed him by making the Elven dragon rider only able to use the weakest forms of magic and it cursed him with him transforming with a strange appearance before turning into his normal self (much is said in Eldest about magic). Oromis and Glaedr manage to escape after Brom kills 3 of the Fornsworn including Morzan (who he stole the blade Zar'Roc from) and as a result caused the death of 5 more as there were 13 Fornsworn. Glaedr is injured with a wound in his knee which now is formed into a stumpy shape. Much of Alagaesia was in Chaos and after learning that the last 3 Dragon Eggs remaining (all the dragons were killed by the Fornsworn) were under Galbatorix's control. Brom then with the help of a friend of his goes after the eggs. He manages to steal one and escape. At this time he becomes founder of a group called the Varden, which is in a Dwarven city deep underground and so was a safe haven for any resisting Galbatorix. Brom (who I should mention is a human), the Elves and the Dwarves come to an agreement that Brom would train the rider who was destined for the egg when it hatched and the Elves would deliver it to cities and towns. Then the rider would go to the Varden and be trained under them and finally to the Elves and then would be sent to take on Galbatorix who became king of Alagaesia and set up his main kingdom in Uru'Baen. Now the dragon has been born and the rider is a human called Eragon (the new Eragon) and his dragon, Saphira, a blue dragon. At this moment they have already been trained under Brom (who died after the Ra'Zac kill him) and have been assisting the Varden and went to the Elves for training before returning to the Varden and fighting once more against Galbatorix who wants them captured. I won't say anymore to ruin the storyline but so far the third and final book is being written.
