After a short silence, Ira said, "If you need me, I'll be in the library." Getting some peace and quiet...reading...and recovering from that headache, she thought, starting for the stairs. She took them two at a time as always, and made a sharp turn down the short hallway right after she reached the bottom. Opening the door at the end of the hall and entering the room, she was welcomed by the complete silence and the curious sense of isolation from the rest of the world. She tugged the window curtains open and pulled a book from a nearby shelf. A bookmark was stuck between the pages, about halfway through. One of the good things about having a hidden inner bookworm, she thought. You always have something to do when things get boring. Opening to the bookmarked page and setting the bookmark aside, Ira settled on the window seat, leaning back and getting comfortable.
Yoruichi scuffed the carpet with one foot over and over, staring at her crossed arms without really seeing them. Now they had more pieces of the puzzle, but...still not enough to finish it. And a few that didn't seem to fit into place at all. It was maddening...and she got the feeling that there was more to what happened to Ira's parents than just "they were murdered." Even though she'd said it without much prodding, Ira's expression when she'd spoken of it...there had been that flash of something in her eyes. Yoruichi had seen it before - when they'd met. Like light glinting off a knife's blade. Something that she instinctively interpreted as a danger sign - almost a nonverbal warning. As if Ira were mentally saying, Back off. You're near dangerous territory.
