G4E, Galaxia, take time to read and reread RT3's posts before sparking a damned flaming session, please.
He has a point in that The old radiation story is done to death. Godzilla? Radiation. Spiderman? Radiation. Hulk? Radiation. and that's just the tip of the iceberg. It got boring years ago. we need some fresh ideas. creativity is the key to an RPG's entertainment value. the more unusual, unpredictable, unexpected and outstanding the event and factors of said event [characters, environment, situation...etc], the more entertaining it is. Sure, abandoning the classic ideas completely isn't an option. coming up with a convincing, original story is time consuming. but the resulting uniqueness of that time is worth it. the resulting character is inherently better than the out-of-the-mold radiation or space-characters [see Superman for examples on that]. at the same time, it also opens the door for more intensive character construction and as a result, development further down the line. in other words, it'll give you more to do later.
You don't need to restrict your characters' backgrounds and origins to generic radiation exposure #467. or generic creature bite#746. or military experiment #647. broaden your horizons. don't keep that mental wall as your barrier. be inventive. innovative. you'll be glad you did later on.
and this does not apply just to SHRPG. I'm talking generally now. creativity will give you more amusement. hell, most of us live routine lives. wake up, do whatever, have lunch, do something else, have dinner, do another thing, sleep, rinse and repeat. why line yourself up for more when you have the opportunity for drastic change?
"Ah yes, organised chaos. the sign of a clever but ever-busy mind. To the perpetrator, a carefully woven web of belongings and intrigue, but to the bystander? Madness!"
–William Beckett, Lore of Leyuna RPG
