"That sounds like an interesting story. Think you can tell it while we head over to those ruins?" Kane asked, the NT-SB clad scientist beginning the trudge through the sands due south, marking the location based on Felicity's position up on the plateau. He had a feeling a magnetic compass would be more than susceptible to interference in the rift, so navigating by landmark was a much safer alternative.

Grim waited until the raptor decided that he was an easy kill. Fooling prey was a tactic that he had used many a hunt and it worked. The raptor leapt towards him both of its killing claw's in the air expecting to imbalance its opponent for an easy kill however Grim had foreseen this and prepared. He catches the claws of the Raptor with the curve of his daggers mid balancing it and before the it can get back up he slices that the tendons on its legs.He the stalks behind the fallen Raptor.Taking his Dagger he pierces a hole into the neck of the raptor. Removing the dagger the replaces it with his mouth using his teeth to keep the hold. He then starts to suck blood out slowly causing the raptor to pass out.

"Well, the first time was in the middle of a scuffle with Raptors while using a tram on the island the Resurrection Incident occurred on. A bunch of Utahraptors tackled the tram and knocked it over into a ditch, and then we were stormed by Raptors from all directions. Long story short, the team had been split into two, with me and a team mate of mine, David, making up one, and everyone else, around...7 or 8 men, if I recall, forming the other. I was picking off my targets with my old H*K assault rifle, and David was, for lack of a better term, leaping at the things' faces with daggers in hand. Hence, one had a dagger sticking out of its face" explained Jacob as he continued his steady pace towards the dying Raptor and its vampiric assailant, in no rush to get there, considering his story wasn't quite finished yet...

"David...leaping at things..." Kane said slowly. "Sometimes, the best way to handle a problem is to throw yourself onto its face and fight your damnedest" the voice echoed in his mind. No, that had to be some kind of coincidence. Yes, that was it. Its pretty common advice even if the wording is different, like take take the bull by the horns or live life to your fullest...

"Yep. In fact, that was the first time he worked with me. By the end of that job everything had gone to hell. The entirety of the other team had been slaughtered by Raptors and other things, their gear wrecked and their escape plan sunk. As for David and I, things had continued to go smoothly since we split from the first group and followed our own plan. I had arranged an evacuation for myself before I started the job. Hadn't been planning to come out with any extra passengers, but David caught my eye. He was cool-headed and brutally efficient, like everyone else on my team. So I 'hired' him. Technically saved his life, considering it was his signing up with me that justified me flying him out of that hellhole" said the Mercenary with a chuckle. "But back to the topic, the second team had been massacred, and we were carving our way up to the roof of a raptor-infested lab facility on the island. I had rigged the base with explosives on my way in. Something called C4. Bloody potent stuff at the time. I had been formulating a contingency plan for the mission, since my employer didn't want anyone getting off the island alive. I knew that any survivor of the Raptor attack would come running when they heard my evac coming in, so I had to make sure nobody was left to tell the story. Long story short, I got up to the roof, jumped into the Helo with David in tow, then levelled the base with the C4. We were the only survivors of that mission, and the US Government finished the job with an ICBM when they realised they had lost the island and everyone they sent to get it back" he explained. "Ironic part is, David was the last to join, and last to leave my little Merc group. Lad even put down one of my older guys once when they went rogue and tried to kill me. Wouldn't've worked, sure, but the fact he stuck his neck out for me that one time, put himself in the line of fire, was something I never forgot. Though I do what I can to pay him back" he added with a smirk...

"He sounds like a really stand up guy..." Kane said, doing his best to conceal his confusion. Wasn't information like that meant to be kept top secret? It might have been a long time since 2010 but a soldier for hire should have had his standards where sharing information was concerned. That only made things even more perplexing. "David...what was his last name?" Kane asked, shaking his head within his helmet. Was he seriously going to ask this?

"Oh he was. One of the most decent men I've ever met in this line of work" responded Jacob calmly, pleased with the direction the conversation was going. "Roman" he said calmly...

Kane would have froze in his steps then, his impartiality and professionalism shattered like stunt glass. Would have stopped there if he were not in a giant suit of scientific instrumentality. Somehow being in it's nigh mechanical embrace allowed him to keep moving despite the whirlwind of thoughts in his head. "Roman...well that's....uh interesting..." Kane replied. "Because he was the one who put me through college and all...huh" he said, sounding rather dumb for a scientist fresh out of university...

"Glad you finally connected the dots" said Jacob with a smirk as he eyed the scientist, the shocked reaction satisfying to no end. "Believe it or not, you meant the world to him" he added...

"He was never around-" Kane started saying but stopped himself. "He was rarely around. He'd appear once out of the blue and stick around for...what? A few weeks? Then all of a sudden he'd have to go on some extended leave" he went on to say. "You mean to tell me my father...my actual father worked with you while I was just a baby? That all those business trips were his missions?"

"Yes, I do. And for that, I apologise. The nature of our work meant the less his family, the less you and your mother, knew about it, the safer you were. So David was forced to keep you in the dark. As much as he wanted to tell you, it was just too dangerous" said Jacob solemnly...

"He meant for the best then...and before mom divorced him, we always had that dog of his around. I have some good memories with him" Kane said with a hint of nostalgia in his voice. "Though it feels like I knew the dog better than I knew him. Even as an old man...even before he..." Kane trailed off. "David Roman. The one who would jump on a dinosaur's face and risk his life for a friend...and I'm his son"

"Surreal, isn't it?" said Jacob with a smile as they neared the vampire and his victim, the Raptor very likely dead or close to from the amount of blood the vampire had drained from it...

"More than you know. Which I have to say, is something considering our surroundings" Kane said, his joking nature slowly resurfacing after such a bombshell of a revelation...

Grim drank until the Raptors heart stopped and when sure the creature was dead he released his teeth from its throat. He then opened his cloak to show his scar almost fully healed.Being back at full power was always useful when exploring a new area. Grim had never explored the ruins he was leading the humans too, and he wanted to know what was inside almost as much as the humans did.He decided he would leave his cloak open, the air felt nice on his skin.
He decided to use the raptor body as a makeshift chair whilst he waited on his traveling companions.

"Was half expecting you to turn into a bat after that" said Jacob off-handedly as he approached the Vampire...

Grim takes off his cloak and flexes his back revealing two bat like wings that were previously hidden under the skin." Like this" Grim laughed" I don't use them much because it drains my energy fast, Two or three hours of flight and I need to feed, maybe four hours if I can catch a good air wave." Grim points to the raptor corpse" any use to your research?"

"Anything I look at will be documented and uploaded to my...vessel's... databanks at the most convenient opportunity" Kane replied. "The more I see, the more complete the research"

"Well you can take your time examining the body we are not that far from the ruins anyway."Grim looks around the area." I will stand guard but I doubt that there will be any problems, most of the other creatures would not dare attack anything that killed a raptor so easily."

"Another Tigrex, perhaps? Or maybe one of those sand creatures?" Kane replied, chuckling after. "I have a feeling that everything is a threat to everything else in this world, he added as he knelt down to investigate the saurian remains. A lightly built creature with a steel gray hide accented by red where bony ridges poked up from its back. While it was similar to a raptor found in Earth's fossil records, it had minute changes that showed that it was different in this world. For one thing, it wasn't carbon based at all, as many other creatures in the rift weren't, Grim included.
