" I have heard stories from my family when they were alive." Grim sighed at the memory"Apparently this world was once a normal balanced food chain with vampires high on it, even though we have never had massive numbers our powers allowed for us to build large structures. But then something happened, the balance of nature was upset and creatures we had never heard of started to appear. The world changed into a survival game and we came very close to losing.I want to find out what caused this world to go so wrong and cause the mass extinction of so much life."
" Although those stories could all be false but they seem likely" Grim stated." Be Careful around the claw's they are very sharp and in deserts have a paralysing venom, nasty stuff" Grim warned.

"Sounds like what would happen if we hadn't got to the rift in time" said Jacob as he walked over to the dead Raptor, kneeling next to it and taking in its details himself, noting the similarities and differences to the ones he slaughtered during the Resurrection Incident...

" The rift, what is the rift? " Grim questioned. If there was anyway to escape from this hell he would find it and this rift seemed like a way out.

"You had the sense to deduce that we were not natives of this place...Give it a bit of thought. You'll figure it out" said Jacob calmly, smirking slightly, amused...

"You might just be right, Jacob," Kane said, the soldier's words sparking an epiphany for the scientist. "temporal distortions? Unstable ecosystem? This world should have been barren and lifeless eons ago, but it isn't. Because it does not accumulate bio-diversity over eras of time. Because it consumes entire worlds and mashes them all together in this realm. And Earth happens to be next"

The armor clad explorer stood. Grim hadn't told them what had happened to the rift, he had told them what happened to the world he once knew, once lived on...and survived an apocalypse as it was torn asunder...

"I seem to remember OWL had found a way to stabilise the portal. I'm no expert, but usually, stabilise means it stays in one state. In this case, it doesn't close on us, nor does it get bigger. Or is there something I wasn't told?" said Jacob as he eyed Kane through narrowed eyes, hidden by his shades, his actual eyes difficult to see past the reflection of the sunset against them...

"Stabilizing is a...broad term," Kane replied, clearing his throat in preparation for what he was going to say. "You see, the devices we called stabilizers were named as such for...public relations? The higher ups aren't as antsy about the completely alien phenomenon when the illusion of control is established. Honestly, those things only make it possible to traverse the planes without being ripped apart from the very basis of reality...we didn't know that the portal would mean the death of the entire planet"

"Well that's just ******* brilliant, isn't it?" said Jacob, gritting his teeth. This wasn't part of the deal. Why hadn't he been warned beforehand? Where was his support? His intel? It seemed he would simply have to adapt...but then, wasn't that always the case? The Mercenary sighed as he shook his head. "Would probably be a good idea to head back to Felicity and give them an update of the situation" he said calmly. And have a talk with my 'Contact' he added mentally...

"Definitely" Kane replied. The situation abruptly became more dire. Was the realization too late? Had the portal increased in power and was already spreading across the world?

"I need to get some feedback from home base, to see where we stand and what we can do about it" he added. Turning to Grim, he said "We'll have to postpone our little trip until further notice"

Without waiting for a reply, Kane started walking back towards the mesa, darkness falling across the red sands. His vision was awash with passive glow as low light imaging compensated for the blackness, there was no moon or stars out tonight. Instead the red dunes were lit by non visible light...

Jacob nodded to the vampire curtly, before turning back towards the ship, accompanying Kane. His augmented vision maintained a high level of full colour visibility, movement tracking systems appearing in his line of vision as golden yellow reticules marking things of interest or threats, the ship marked in the distance by a red reticule. His assault rifle was held in hand as he kept the other free, allowing him the ability of intercepting threats at any distance, be it a few hundred yards, or mere inches. an assortment of other weapons were concealed beneath his trenchcoat, to be brought to bare should the situation warrant. For now however, the assault rifle would suffice...

"Would it be best for me to follow you or stay here and wait?"Grim asked. He wanted to know what was going on as much as the humans."From what I have just figured out this place is not my world , it is a compilation of many parts from destroyed worlds and I have the feeling that from what I have been told your world is next?"Grim was concerned, He new that humans had the potential to be prolific breeders and rise to the top of the food chain. He wanted to help and not allow for potentialy billions of them to suffer the same fate his species did."From what I know the changes happen slowly and you should still have time to find a way to stop this."

Following Damian's orders, both Yukari and Rebin looked away from the grim figure's eyes, but as both backed away, Yukari still had it in her line of sight... and aimed and fired her plasma gun directly at it... THey were so close to their goal, and yet for this obstacle to appear...

Kane turned around and shouted to Grim, his voice distorted considerably "I don't think we'll be available for quite some time and the ship only seats two!"

Pointing himself back on course, he kept pace with Jacob, gradually nearing the plateau...

The creature seemingly shot from side to side, easily avoiding the plasma bolts, but was soon caught off guard when Damian fired a grenade at its feet. The explosion splashed over the monster, sending it backwards and bathing it in a flash of light. The creature snarled in pain, and suddenly disappeared from sight. It seemed like the coast was clear... but looks could be decieving...

"Is... is it gone?" Yukari asked, still aiming her plasma gun, and looking around carefully.

"I don't think it is, but it looks like the light hurt it. If we can get out into the sun, it can't get to us." Rebin noted, also aiming his pistol around. Both of them were on the edge, and being cautious. Whatever that thing was... they had to be ready... It seemed all too tempting to make a dash now and lower their guard... but if that thing was still there, that was what it wanted them to do.

Damian kept his guard up, looking around the entire area, scanning for the nightmarish creature. The flashlight on Damian's shoulder soon activated, scanning the shadows of the trees like a beacon slicing through the night. Suddenly, Damian's light fell upon the form of Crom, which caught the monster by surprise. With an angry hiss of pain, Crom slithered quickly out of the ray of light, and swiflty disappeared. The scuttling of his form was audible somewhere behind the group, as if he was planning to strike at the right moment...

"Move.. now, before it comes back!" Damian hissed as he pressed forward, still scanning around with his flashlight in order to drive the monster away if need be...

That was all it took to send both Yukari and Rebin running as fast as they could toward the clearing. The thing was now behind them, so they were now in the home streach back to the vehicle. It was now or never, and they could taste safety in the APC...

Kane sat at his terminals, alerts and other readouts flashing on his screen, a feed from home base giving him energy signatures and other portal activity. His suit, stowed away in the container in the side of the cockpit, streamed the images he had acquired from his research before this much more pressing discovery struck.

"Damn it..." Kane hissed, his suspicions seemingly confirmed by the data. A gradual increase in portal energy was occurring on the other side. In addition to getting more violent, the maelstrom of disruption was enlarging. The immediate area of the portal was falling into the nether dimension correlating to the amount of energy within the rift.

As the rift grew more powerful...the less time Earth had before it too joined the worlds that had come before it...

"How did this slip the net?" questioned Jacob on a private channel, piggy-backing on the primary signal used by OWL via the Relativity Coil technology, to communicate with his employer directly. "This isn't just OWL we're dealing with, Jacob. I told you that at the beginning. There are dozens of mega corporations digging their claws into this, trying to take control of the operation. The funding has to come from somewhere. As it happens, I've twisted myself into a position where I'm the only thing protecting OWL from them. That's how I got you onto the scene at such short notice. But with how little time this whole operation has been going, you have to understand that I hadn't the opportunity to get all the information. I'm still sifting through the data as we speak" responded the man on the other end. "For ****'s sake, Atlas. We've been working together for the better part of two centuries. I know you're never that sloppy" responded Jacob hotly. "Yes. I am not. But I am not perfect, as much as I try to be. There is a lot of data in OWL's databases, as well as those of 15 different international organisations that managed to catch shards of the event before it got locked down. That kind of bulk takes time to get through" responded Atlas calmly. Jacob sighed, frustrated by the situation. ".....Right. So what happens now?" questioned the Mercenary after a long pause...

A sigh came on the other end of the line. "Well, as soon as news breaks of the destabilisation, odds are emergency procedures will be put in place. The Kill Switch....They'll collapse the portal. Cut it off before it can do any more damage" said Atlas slowly. "...Brilliant. Suppose it serves me right for offering to walk through hell for money like a bloody muppet...Suppose it's only convenient they 'forget' the coming back part of the deal. But what about the others? Kane, the other team, they're employees. They cou-" started Jacob, only to be cut off. "-And as such they have already signed disclaimers acknowledging that their lives are expendable should the situation arise. Granted, I'm fairly sure most if not all of them didn't read the fine print and missed that little detail. Doesn't change the fact that they have basically signed their own death warrants before starting their mission. OWL and those funding them won't be held responsible for it" responded Atlas with a practised calm. "....Bloody hell. So we're just going to be left to our fates in this inter-dimensional apocalyptic wasteland, forgotten by the people we serve? Oh, no. I'm not going to go out like that. I didn't promise David I'd keep an eye on his lad, just to end up getting killed off along with him in this hell-hole" said Jacob, his tone notably more angry than it had been in the beginning of the conversation. "You may not have a choice. Felicity isn't entirely under Kane's control, as much as he likes to think it. You won't be able to come back without a green light from this side"...

Meanwhile, Kane received his one message from Mr. Calhoun. "Endgame Scenario. Flip the board"

It was cryptic enough that the many eyes watching him would not grasp the weight of the situation, but Kane knew immediately what he meant. It was why he was fully prepared to do this mission alone. On the off chance that a level 5 world threat should be found on the other side, he was willing to be the one to deal with it.

"Give my life to protect the future of planet Earth. How much more noble can you get?" he had thought numerous times during the extensive flight and utility training.

That was before he found out his father was a mercenary, however; that his partner had been the one assigned as a security force. The coincidence of that did not pass over his head. Someone was pulling specific strings back home, to what end he could not know. And he didn't care.

There were more pressing matters at hand. He just had to find a way to break the news to Jacob...

News that the cyborg already knew...
