OOC: You don't know anything about Arachnids, do you LE?
The grenades proved ineffective. The Brain Bugs were too far underground to be harmed by the attack. On the surface, the Arachnid Warriors were hardly fazed by Carbine fire, their thick carapaces absorbing the rounds easily. Only armor-piercing or explosive weapons could potentially harm an Arachnids of any type, and even then the Warriors were infamous for their persistence, fighting on even after losing limbs. Even the Energy Swords weren't useful enough to cut down more than a few Arachnids before they were overwhelmed and ripped to pieces. Plasma Rifles were moderately useful, but the Arachnid numbers proved too much, making even these hard to use. Plasma Pistols never worked, as the Charged Shots did nothing to the Warriors. Even when the Covenant forces managed to dodge emerging Arachnid attackers, Hoppers or Ripplers would usually attack them from the sky or they would jump right into another Warrior or Tiger Bug. The Arachnids with ranged attacks, namely the Tankers, Plasma Bugs, and Ripplers, were either hard to hit, or virtually invincible to small-arms fire. Even though they were outnumbered, this did not last long. a third wave of spores arrived, landing on the planet and bolstering the Arachnid numbers to a whopping 2 billion.
The entrance the Skaven had come out of, along with the one nearby, were the closest entrances underground to get to the cannon. They were pretty much Martain's only way in. Each one led into a massive cavern, machinery covering their walls and catwalks higher above. Smaller halls stretched from these. The loud, clanking machinery had prevented any Skaven in the caverns to hear anything above ground unless they were near the exit, as the two Skaven earlier were.
